Oil/Mileage
Suggested oil for an 04 Rx8?
And suggested every miles you should change it? i was thinking 5,000miles? |
Depends on your climate. Around here in NJ, I use 5w-30 in winter and 10w-40 in summer. Synthetic will last 5k, but for dino it's better to change oil every 3.5k or so. Only about half of the oil is changed, that's why most people change more frequently than Mazda recommends.

What is the best oil type to use in an 04 rx8 for best performance. i live in MASS, I have heard many differnt contrary things
|
|
5k synthetic? I hear 10k.
In anycase, Use 5w-30 or heavier. I think that much is pretty unanimous. 5w-20 is weak. I am using 10w-40 year round, but I have a turbo, so that's more heat I'm dealing with. 10w-40 might be a lil heavy for winter on NA, but I'm sure you could get by on it. |

I suck ass at acronyms. |
It means the poster expects the thread to be locked (closed) shortly, due to the huge number of previous threads adressing the identical question, in the past week......
In Before The Lock IBTL . . . . S |

but ur a mod Stealth, why didnt YOU lock it?
It's a conspiracy I tells ya. |
It his thread, he wants info.
He's just too lazy to pull that manual out of the glovebox and read what the recomended oil is, so you gots to tell him. It's all good, no need for lockage........ S |
Yeah, I really didn't expect it to get locked. I was just making a somewhat obscure point. :uhh:

Meh, I think you guys fail for just suggesting the search function. Using it reveals there is most definatly NOT a consensus on this and thus always more to talk about.
heavier oils would seem to protect better at higher temperature. Lighter oil would seem to protect better on cold starts before the operating temperature is up. BOTH opposing issues are clearly a concern with this car, and I see nothing that suggests that someone has a magic oil that does both perfectly. If you read about Synthetic oil, the main benefit is long life. Since Mazda recommends against that, the logical, non risky solution is to use Mazda recommended 5W20 but change it at 2500 intervals. Everyone who thinks they can experiment to find magic oil that is better and can be changed less....eh good luck with that. |

Try again friend.:eyetwitch |
Exactly Shaun, that's my point. :icon_tup:

The benefit to the OP of starting a new thread is to not getting flamed for bumping old threads, which is typical. Also to get an actual recent anwser since the search function on this topic reveals controversial and conflictong old info.
The benefit to the community is to make it clear there is not a consensus and old posts don't definitively anwser the question. I dont think a magic 8 ball forum where you ask a question and your search reveals randomly varying awnsers from the past is very helpful. |
Both the threads I suggested have data as well as good discussion and both have been active within the last 2 weeks.
Both would be good places to read up on the question and then ask an educated question. |
