OFFICIAL new Ford Mondeo Pics

Yesterday i posted one pic i got from autoblog that was an "unofficial leak"

Today the official pics are out. When the Fusion/Edge vehicles move to this new platform in a couple of years Ford NEEDS to build a wagon just like this for here. In fact just build this Mondeo at Flat Rock and rebadge it as the Fusion Wagon. Of course they will already have the Mazda6 wagon to compete against which will be on this new architecture

That straight on front view looks like Ford's take on a Tiburon. Any word if they're going to make any sedans that look similar to this? I think it's a good look - a whole lot better than their bread and butter stuff nowdays.

bascho 09-22-2006 12:14 PM

The Freestyle already fills the wagon segment for Ford where Mazda has the Mazda6 wagon. I don't see Ford offering another wagon of similar size with the current popularity of the Freestyle and the upcoming refresh for the 2008MY. Plus Ford has the Focus wagon in the C-car segment.

playdoh43 09-22-2006 12:14 PM

looks like a rx8 :)

The Mondeo Saloon with have the same styling. Remember, in most of the world the Mondeo is Ford's banner vehicle.

Looks like a CX-7 from the back.

A lot of the same designers.

Yep... and Ford should drop the current Fusion for it... and call it the Fusion. Don't get me wrong... the current Fusion isn't ugly... just that this car looks that much more interesting.

Importing a limited edition car... like 5,000 per year of the Ford Falcon would be a good idea too... a nice quick RWD sports sedan.

XDEEDUBBX 09-22-2006 12:20 PM

looks like something audi would make

zoom44 09-22-2006 12:23 PM

Rhawb - Yes there will be a SedanSaloon and probably a Five door Hatch. the front is nearly a straight lift from the stunningly goood looking Ford Iosis concept

Bascho- oops i forgot about the Freestyle

I agree with you and would love to see the Mondeo here in the US. I had a 2000 Contour SVT (same as a ST24 Mondeo) and that car was great. Unfortunately the pricing and popularity of the Taurus killed the market for the Contour and it was terminated in 2000. Ford really got burned on that deal and is not ready to risk that again in the near future. Plus, the CD3 platform is really good and Ford is able to offer a very competent vehicle for the price point. Bringing the Mondeo here would be very expensive and people here don't understand/appreciate the heritage of that nameplate.

Jedi54 09-22-2006 12:27 PM

wow, lookin' pretty sharp. For once, I'm impressed with the interior of a Ford.

its the line of the windows and roof line- i made that same point in the cx-9 thread yesterday.

this is on the next generation of the platform the current fusion is on. i expect the fusion to move to this platform in a couple of years. some of the styling will surely make its way as well.

The name crossover is used to broadly IMO. I would not consider the Freestyle a CUV even though Ford does.......I think it's a wagon. Pacifica, Edge/MKX, Murano.....those are CUV's to me.

Hell, the name cross-over was created for vehicles that looked like the offspring of a mini-van and an SUV. The Freestyle looks like a wagon.....the XC70 looks like a wagon......the Magnum looks like a wagon. But the manufactures of these vehicles classify them as CUV because that is the zeitgeist.

zoom44 09-22-2006 12:49 PM

see i think of the Freestyle as a Pacifica competitor

I agree they compete for the same customer. Similar power, similar cargo capacity, similar seating configuration........but totally different look. My wife has a 2006 Pacifica and I always call it her mini-van. She wants the Freestyle for her next lease and I can honestly say I wouldn't call that vehicle a mini-van....I'll call it her wagon. 'Shaggin wagon' most likely ;)

zoom44 09-22-2006 12:59 PM

sure i see what you're saying- the Freestyle just looks more like a Escape to me than it does a "traditional" wagon.

I see that connection also.

I think if "most of the world" gets nice cars, the US should be considered "most of the world."

Especially by a company that was founded here!

Who said the US doesn't get nice cars? Not me. I just said that the Mondeo is Ford's large car in most markets. Here in the USA we like our cars big and the Mondeo didn't sell well here because of the larger Taurus.

Japan8 09-22-2006 04:00 PM

But now the 500 is even bigger (than the Taurus)... there's room for something closer to the Mondeo in size...

zoom44 09-22-2006 04:22 PM

well the fusion IS closer to the mondeo in size

ASH8 09-22-2006 06:01 PM

Interesting...as bascho says the Mondeo is considered a "large" car in the UK and Europe, Ford Australia imported your Taurus (first series) and was a flop. At the time I did not mind the looks, but motor writers absolutely dumped on the overall fit and finish of the car.

The "New" updated-updated Falcon MKII is about to be launched here soon, the all new GM (billion dollar) Holden VE Commodore is slaughtering it in sales.

Latest Automotive design versus a Falcon that is really over 14 years old...

All new Falcon late next year.

Renesis_8 09-22-2006 06:07 PM

It looks pretty good, but only if the final product remains simliar, I hope they dont screw this up.

Exactly. So kill the Fusion and bring the Mondeo!

The all new Falcon works too. The idea is just that Ford needs a RWD sports sedan somewhere in it's lineup. There have been rumors of GM bringing over the Commodore... seems like even GM may be smart enough to see the potential is this market.

Forget where I read it (I should honestly save links to info of this nature gr) but GM is thinking of turning Pontiac into its "performance car" division if you will. Hence all rear wheel drive cars. Some of my friends were talking and we all agreed, GM should rape Holdens cars and ship them here and just leave the names alone since they killed the GtO by slapping that name badge on it.

BtW I like the look of the Mondeo has a more aggresive look to it and less of a "granny mobile lite" like the Fusion. Test drive one of them I dare you, you'll realize this car sucks the only plus is they somehow are able to get that Ford exhaust note to come through on the 4 banger but the sound doesnt match the power so its more of a huh?! feel.

What powers the Mondeo anyways

Why do you hate the Fusion? I know you want a m/t....but aside from that?

Who said I hate the Fusion? The exterior styling is O K. The interior leaves a bit to be desired though... especially the steering wheel. And yes... the lack of M/T with the V6 is a deal breaker.

A SVT Fusion with AWD and 275-300hp V6, sporty seats and steering wheel... that could get my attention.

The Fusion isn't a bad car it just lacks passion. Ford needs to stop designing cars "by the numbers" and instead aim to be interesting cars... cars with passion. The Mondeo's styling makes much more of a statement than the Fusion... and that is something that Ford needs right now.

DOMINION 09-23-2006 02:26 PM

Wounder how long till some Civic kid trys to put them dam bling wheels on there ride

CarAndDriver 09-23-2006 09:08 PM

Well the last Mondeo brought over (the Contour) was not a great success other than being loved by journalists. To most Americans, a good driving car did not overcome the tepid styling and tiny interior.

Japan8 09-23-2006 09:21 PM

And THAT and more is what is wrong with the current Fusion...

map 09-23-2006 11:47 PM

The thing that killed the Contour in my mind is that it just looked like a slightly bigger Escort, and everyone already HATED the Escort. Styling absolutely killed it, but now that's fixed Ford is too insecure to give it another chance. It's too bad because the ST version looks like a really sweet car.

I think the market had shifted by the time Ford offered the Countour. They brought the Escort over and it was very successfull. The Focus was set to replace it. The Contour got the shaft even though it was a very good car IMO. I loved the SVT Contour and have a couple of friends who own them. I think the SVTC was a little ahead of the curve and sadly it got the axe.

I was driving to Austin this weekend for the UT game and saw a current model Mondeo on the road that was a mexican national model. Its a nice looking car, a little plain, but I can't see how it wouldn't sell.

I see Ka's all over Houston, since alot of Mexican Nationals drive up to Houston for Shopping/Med Center etc....

I bang my head against the wall wondering why Ford doesn't bring them across the border, federalizing them can't be that expensive, espically since you don't have to ship them over the ocean.

Design1stCode2nd 09-25-2006 12:03 PM

GM has finally gotten the idea by bringing the Opel brand here. Ford should do the same and just sell them through Mercury. The mondeo looks fairly good although I loved the exterior of the Iosis concept. The production versions are not nearly as sexy but still nice.

tiltmode43 09-25-2006 06:53 PM

based off the same chassis as the xr8 falcon?

CarAndDriver 09-26-2006 11:43 AM

And I'm also glad to see Ford trying to design interiors that attempt to look different than each other. I really hate the current look of the stereo and climate controls that get stuck in almost every Ford. They were dated the minute they came out.

Razz1 10-01-2006 06:36 PM

Again with the BLIN BLING wheels.

Looks like a toy car.
