Official 2014 United SportsCar Championship Season Discussion

goodbye Grand Am Series and Hello United SportsCar Championship Series Racing.

Still a few months out from racing but news is starting to trickle in about the class structures, teams, schedules, etc so I thought we'd get things started.

2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Schedule
  • Jan 25-26 Daytona International Speedway
  • Mar 15 Sebring International Raceway
  • Apr 12 Long Beach Street Circuit
  • May 4 Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
  • May 31 Detroit Belle Isle
  • Jun 29 Watkins Glen International
  • Jul 13 Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • Jul 25 Indianapolis Motor Speedway
  • Aug 10 Road America
  • Aug 24 Virginia International Raceway
  • Sep 20 Circuit of The Americas
  • Oct 4 Road Atlanta

Anyone planning on / excited about attending any of those races?

Class Structure
  • Perhaps the most notable confirmation is that Grand-Am's GX Class -- which debuted this season as its slowest GT-style class -- will transition into USCR's GT Daytona Class.
  • Meanwhile, the GT Le Mans Class will retain the ALMS' current GT specs. It will also include a new safety feature in the form of side nets around the driver's seat to help keep drivers in place in the event of a crash.
  • The GT Daytona class -- comprised of Grand-Am's current GT cars and the ALMS' GT Challenge-class Porsches -- will see performance balancing in an attempt to make all cars competitive with each other. A method of restricting engine air intake will be mandatory, as will single-lug, single-piece wheels. Every GTD car will carry a series-specified rear wing. GTD may also include FIA GT3 cars with minimal modifications, providing they meet class performance targets. Overall, however, the regulations will be based on the current Rolex Series GT rules.
  • The Prototype class -- consisting of Grand-Am's Daytona Prototype cars and the ALMS' LMP2 cars -- will see performance balancing as well, and will allow cars to use paddle shifters with six-speed gearboxes. Cars considered LMP2 in origin will follow current technical specs of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, the organizer of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sonic air-intake restrictors will be uses for all approved engines for LMP2 and DP cars
  • Finally, the LMP Challenge class will retain its current ALMS specs.
  • Cars in every class except for LMPC will also carry series-mandated data loggers, which will be downloaded on every pit stop. Teams will be responsible for the proper operation of the data loggers.
  • Each car will use standardized number panels with colored backgrounds identifying each class, similar to what is being used now in the ALMS. The panels will be backlit for night races.
  • Another feature sure to be popular with fans is the return of a new and improved “leader lights” system, required on all cars. The colored lights, which will be similar in color to the number panels, will enable fans to determine each car's running position within its class at all times.

Looks like the Ford boys have been keeping busy trying to find more speed for next year.

Ford Racing EcoBoost prototype sets new Daytona speed record: 222.971 mph

Ford Racing's new EcoBoost Daytona Prototype will compete in next year's inaugural TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, the merged series that brings American Le Mans and Grand Am together. And it will do it with one heck of a prototype car, from the early look of things. The EcoBoost V-6 prototype engine just set a new speed record at Daytona International Speedway.

The old record was set back in 1987 by Bill Elliott in a NASCAR cup car during qualifying for the Daytona 500, at 210.364 mph.

Ford's new Daytona Prototype smashed that record, recording a lap of 222.971 mph, completing the circuit in just 40.364 seconds.
riven by Colin Braun, the Michael Shank Racing prototype also set new FIA World Record times for the standing 10-km distance (202.438 mph) and the 10-mile distance (210.018 mph), pending certification by the FIA.

Of course, that's just one car turning laps on an empty track. Next year's challenges will be much more significant, with two prototype classes and three GT classes in the mix all at once.

Still, it looks like Ford Racing and its Roush Yates-built V-6 EcoBoost engine will do well for Michael Shank Racing if it holds up to the rigors of real-world racing.

They need the speed to battle the BMW powered cars.

Mazda is upp'ing their game and just announced they'll be running in the Prototype class this year!

Mazda Motorsports Announces Return to Elite Racing Prototype Program

November 14, 2013 (IRVINE, Calif.)—At Mazda, “Never Stop Challenging” isn’t just a catchphrase, it’s a company maxim. After nearly two years of planning, Mazda Motorsports will field a pair of factory-backed SKYACTIV-D Smart Diesel-powered racecars in the top Prototype Class for the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship (USCC), beginning with the Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 25-26, 2014. This is a major step up for Mazda, having won the 2013 Grand-Am GX Manufacturers Championship. Mazda will be challenging for overall race wins against the toughest sports car competitors in North America.

“This is the most significant step Mazda has taken towards returning to the global racing stage since our overall victory at Le Mans in 1991,” said John Doonan, director of Mazda Motorsports. “And thanks to our SKYACTIV-D Mazda6 racecars winning nine of 12 Rolex GRAND-AM GX races and the GRAND-AM GX Manufacturers Championship this year, we’re confident that our two prototype cars will challenge the best North America has to offer.”

Long-time racing partner SpeedSource Race Engineering, the team that oversaw Mazda’s GX-class championship in 2013, will carry responsibility to develop and run the cars on track. Additionally, Mazda also is in discussions with customer teams interested in the prototype class, as well as teams interested in developing the championship winning Mazda6 into a GT Daytona class car.

Sylvain Tremblay, Owner, SpeedSource Engineering noted; “As a racer, you always want to be in the fastest class. The development of the Mazda SKYACTIV-D was a great deal of work by Mazda and SpeedSource and it will be quite the task to take this to the front of the prototype class in only our second year of competition. Mazda and SpeedSource will have a busy November and December of testing as we prepare for Daytona.”

As part of its challenger frame of mind, Mazda is the only OEM racing with a diesel engine. The SKYACTIV-D Smart Diesel race engine is a true production-based engine and a carry-over from the development work done with the Mazda6 GX-class racing cars. The engine is 51 percent stock by parts count, and 63 percent stock by weight. Mazda chose this path as it is the most honest way to demonstrate the performance, quality, durability, and reliability of Mazda powerplants.

Driver line-ups and team partners will be announced at a later date. The cars will make their first public appearance at the “Roar Before the 24” test at Daytona, January 3-5, 2014.

DP's during testing are still 2 sec. slower than LMP2's.

They sandbagging?

alnielsen 01-24-2014 08:06 PM

The Mazda diesel's qualified last on the Provisional Grid. Slower than all the cars.

Road to the Rolex 24 FSN2 @ 12:30 1hr.

Jedi54 01-25-2014 02:57 PM

looks like the 07 had some early engine trouble and was forced to pit.
back out there but has a lot of laps to make up.

70 is about 6 laps behind but both Diesels are running about 10 seconds a lap slower then the race leaders.
10 seconds is an eternity to try and find out there. Lets hope they can come up with something or this is going to get ugly.

c'mon Mazda!

RIWWP 01-25-2014 04:16 PM

Holy hell that was a hard hit...

RIWWP 01-25-2014 04:20 PM

You can hear the helicopter winding up in the background, which isn't too surprising.

alnielsen 01-25-2014 08:13 PM

I think foxsports.com/motor is having a bandwidth problem. I can't keep the live timing up and the video feed keeps dropping out.

Things are working better now.

RIWWP 01-25-2014 10:11 PM

The traffic out on track is substantial. Generates a lot of crazy stuff.

Jedi54 01-26-2014 08:32 PM

Mazda has a long way to go if they're going to be competitive this season.
