NSX coming back?!

I'm guessing others saw the Super Bowl ad just now... Did I miss this before or was that the first bit of information leaked about it?

paimon.soror 02-05-2012 07:56 PM

some info has been leaked before, i think it is in one of my motortrend mags. It is supposed to be a hybrid iirc

Nopstnz8 02-05-2012 08:02 PM

Yeah it's been rumored for years, but I guess now it's FINALLY official!

9krpmrx8 02-05-2012 08:05 PM

They have been going back and forth on it, convertible, hybrid, mid engine coupe, etc. Of all the crazy expensive cars my boss has owned his favorite was still his first gen NSX. He has owned several Acura's since and he already has a standing offer (knows the president of Gunn Acura) at the Acura dealer on the first to arrive if and when it does. He doesn't even car if it is really a good replacement for the original

But it looks like it is a real replacement.......... V-10?

Ricky SE3P 02-05-2012 08:09 PM

I saw the commercial..

Acura Reveals NSX Hybrid Concept
NSX Concept to be developed and built in America with new performance hybrid system

There was a nice symmetry about the unveiling of the Acura NSX concept by Honda CEO Takanobu Ito at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Twenty-five years ago the man who now heads the entire company was lead engineer on the team which created the original NSX.

‘That was the biggest engineering challenge of our lives,' said Ito. ‘The key attributes had to be power and weight, which is why we ended up making it out of aluminum.' The NSX, the first supercar from Japan, was revealed at the Tokyo show in 1989 and proved to be a game-changer.

It showed that supercars could be used every day without the histrionics often evident in its contemporary rivals, and could be driven just as easily by a professional racing driver or a grandmother. It forced a major rethink by established supercars brands such as Ferrari and Porsche.

The new model, although officially a concept, will be on sale around the world within three years, said Ito, and will be very similar to the car on show.

In a statement of intent to the American market, which is more important to Honda than even Japan, and a response to the over-valued yen, it will be developed by the company's engineering teams in the US and built at its plant in Ohio for all markets. It also demonstrates Honda's commitment towards sustainability at all levels, and to hybrids in particular, with a petrol-electric drive-train.

Like the previous NSX, it will have a mid-mounted V6 engine, this time with direct fuel injection, to drive the rear wheels, but also two electric motors mounted at the front to give it all-wheel drive. Honda calls the system SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive), and it can adjust the torque sent to each end on demand, driving through a twin-clutch paddle-shift transmission with built-in electric motor.

As with the previous NSX, it will not necessarily aim to be the most powerful supercar around, but will instead focus on performance through ‘engineering efficiency and light weight,' says Ito.

It will go on sale first in the US under Honda's Acura luxury sub-brand, and will come to Europe a little later - probably some time in 2014 - as a Honda. The car will be shown at Geneva in March wearing Honda badges.

About The Acura NSX Concept:

The dynamically-styled NSX Concept gives an indication of the next great performance vehicle from the Acura brand. Making use of lightweight materials and a mid-mounted V-6 engine, the NSX Concept employs several new technologies for Acura, including application of Acura's innovative new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® (Super Handling All Wheel Drive™) hybrid system.

Utilizing a unique 2 Electric Motor Drive Unit with a Bilateral Torque Adjustable Control System, the all-new hybrid all-wheel-drive system can instantly generate negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering. Acura anticipates the new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® will deliver handling performance unmatched by previous AWD systems. In addition to the handling benefits of the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® system, a powerful next-generation VTEC® V-6 engine with direct-injection works in concert with a dual clutch transmission with built-in electric motor to create supercar acceleration while offering outstanding efficiency.

"This Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will make NSX the ultimate expression of Acura's idea to create synergy between man and machine," said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. "The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way."

While most supercars opt for brute force delivered from a large engine, the NSX Concept champions the true racing philosophy of an extremely favorable power-to-weight ratio.

"Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency," added Ito, who led the development of Acura's first NSX supercar. "In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities."

The new Acura supercar, expected to debut in the next three years, will be developed by an engineering team led by Honda R&D Americas, Inc., and manufactured in Ohio, at a yet to be named facility.

Not sure how I managed to miss this. Seeing as that concept is fairly recent, it doesn't seem out of the question that the hybrid aspects might be accurate. That said, it is a concept so I wouldn't be completely sure until they've made some official statements.

It's definitely nice to see it coming back in any form. Hopefully it at least comes close to living up to the name.

there's been some articles of it in modified mag, idk tho... i think i prefer the looks of an rx8 instead hahaha guess i got a cheaper taste in cars.

It's almost look similar to an Audi R8.

Look at the Acura web site, its there there are building it!!!

I searched earlier and didn't see the official page show up... I must have looked over it. They should have more information on that page considering they've done an advertisement for it. Even if it was just a teaser.

meh,

after the lfa i think is is. why bother. going to be to much money for almost everyone. and honda has not done a thing for the car guys for to long.. they should have just made a camery.

beers

And why couldn't Mazda do something like this, but with a rotary? The rotary is even lighter. Mazda could do it on a lesser scale, say something like a 50-60 grand halo car. Make it real lightweight and about the handling.

2012 Acura NSX?

Not sure who was actually watching the superbowl commercials but did anybody see the commercial for the new 2012 Acura NSX??

I know it's old news but it was the first time i've actually seen shots of it.

The front end already looks like a Mazda design.

This is what caught my eye. It's a step in the right direction.

The handling/grip benefits when you can so quickly and dynamically control the torque applications to a given wheel in both rotational directions has to be substantial.

This doesn't mean that one front wheel will start spinning backwards, but instead it's basically "applying the brakes" on that wheel in a very specific, very measurable, and repeatable way.

The first production (even if for strictly racing) sports car with it's drive system featuring an independant electric motor for each axle as the power output source will be able to destroy any current-world sports car in grip and handling. (assuming the manufacturer doesn't screw it up with terrible suspension, tires, etc...)

- Full time AWD with perfect full control over not just how much power is going to each wheel, but it can 'drag' the inside wheels slightly as needed
- Perfect full time traction control, with the ability to precisely dial in a hair less torque than the point at which traction is lost.
- Perfect ABS (apply negative torque to shed speed, and the same forward traction control will also function as a perfect ABS system)
(note, I don't intend to mean "safety nannies". But perfect ability to apply exactly the maximum amount of torque in the requested direction that the tires can withstand, every single time. You tell it what you want and it gets you exactly to that maximum, immediately. Be it braking grip, acceleration grip, cornering grip.)
- Rotational mass at a fraction of today's cars without the entire brake assembly needed
- "Engine" weight is now split equally to all 4 corners. the remaining electrical generator/capacitor can be located literally anywhere in the car for truly perfectly optimized weight distribution (just run the electrical cables). And every single bit of the weight is as low as the chassis gets
- Transmissions will be largely unnecessary, or if they are used, will be 2 or 3 geared. The Namir has a top speed of 190+ with no transmission. Any 'gearing down' you need to do just means that you either need to trade RPMs for torque (if you used relatively tiny electric motors that didn't produce enough instant torque for the application) or the motor's max RPM translated into a MPH that wasn't high enough.
- No drivetrain hardware will have to physically connect one corner to another, eliminating vehicle weight, rotational mass, physical space around the corners and things like 'driveshaft tunnels'.

The GTR took a very big step in this direction with all of it's computer-based assistance. But imagine an 1,800lb GTR, with all of it's weight 4 inches off the ground. Most drivers simply would not be able to out-drive the car's capabilities. They would only be able to to outdrive the environment around them and their own thinking/reacting speed.

If Honda does this right, they will be taking yet another step that way (even if it may technically underperform the GTR)
