I know the following pics. have been posted on this forum before, but no one I know has been able or willing to answer my few meager questions. Call it my naivete, but are these things just new versions of MX-6's. The photo captions and license plates list them as RS-coupe A-Type and E-Type.

Does anyone have anymore information than just this? Are they J-spec? only available in Japan? New concept models? Old restyled versions of some model I may not (and I'm admitting my ignorance here) know?

Can anyone please help or maybe at least guide me in the right direction?

there is a "virtual garage" section of the Mazda japan site that i can't find just now, that i used to have a link saved for. i have seen either those pics or very similar ones on there. they are MX-5 coupes. i think there is a way (mazdaspeed or something) that you can purchase them or purchase kits . sorry i would be of more help but i can't find the page.

I thought I saw simialr pictures of that car in one of the auto mags that mentioned it as the coupe version of the Miata, but I'm not too sure so don't take me up on this.

the red one has ugly rims IMO

They are photos of the new Roadster Coupe, to be produced in limited numbers for Japan only by Mazda's Engineering and Technology division. The Roadster is known as the Miata in North America, so in essence it is a Miata Coupe. For several engineering reasons related to production techniques and restrictions, they can NOT be produced in large numbers and will NOT ever be sold in North America.

Thanks for the info, Gordon! Maybe then something like an appearance 'kit' (for lack of a better term) can be fashioned to mimic them. Then the performance modifications can be added to suit one's particular tastes/needs... :D

And I agree, the rims on the red one DO look ridiculous... perhaps the style & rims of the yellow, with the flaring hot red paint job... :p

those cars are so beautiful, they look like retro-italian designs...

does anyone know WHY the will never be on our shores?

Oh, you wanted me to tell you? ;)

Well, Mazda's E&T division could only make an economic case for production by using low-yield regular steel body dies, rather than the much more expensive tool steel dies needed for high volume production. The thing with low-yield dies is that they wear out much faster, so can only be used for a certain number of panel presses (ie under a thousand, rather than hundreds of thousands).

So - Mazda E&T can not physically produce large numbers of those cars, they can only produce a few hundred. Also, because the structure is different than the US certified Miata, to import the car to North America would have required a very expensive recertification program (crash tests etc., which costs a couple of million dollars), which could never be cost justified for the few hundred cars that they might be able to sell.

couldnt they just make it like uhhhhhh more expensive?

drop a i6 or v6 in there, use beautiful leather, have very very nice seats, beautiful dash, leather up the dash and doors, nice gauges
good yet ligthwieght soud system, like a 6disc with 6 speakers or something, or a single with 6 or 4

just make the inside as beautiful as the outside they could sell it for a lot more than a regular miata and could POSSIBLY justify the cost of brining it here

too damned bad though......such a gorgeous car
