Up until the mid-Nineties, European racetracks were filled with the buzzing sounds of Wankel-engined Norton motorcycles terrorizing their larger four-stoke twin-cylinder competitors and winning races such as the Isle of Man TT in 1992.

That unmistakable buzzsaw sound is set to make a comeback at this year's running at the Isle of Man as the latest Norton revival takes to the track. Click past the break for a video of the rotary-powered NRV588 as it makes a few laps at Donington Park and the dyno. Pay special attention to the exposed exhaust pipes, which reportedly get so hot they need to be made from Inconel.

It is SO hot...

literally too

TheBurkeMan 04-14-2009 10:49 PM

those exhaust were ridiculously HOT!!!

StealthTL 04-14-2009 11:00 PM

Check out that exhaust smoke, and tell me he's not running 50:1 pre-mix!

Cam 04-15-2009 07:43 PM

so is this going to be a production bike? Love the sound of the rotary in a bike.

I wish! I think it's going to be one of those bikes made for race teams to buy.

Wow, that's amazing how you can see the Inconel piping pulsing hotter and cooler along with the throttle action.

jsjjr 04-16-2009 09:04 AM

That was incredible..

not saying its def, but on there website there is a tab for NRV588 Rotary Road Bike.

Norton NRV588 Rotary Road Bike

Brian Crighton and Spondon Engineering have been developing the new NRV 588 race bikes for well over a year now, as these race bikes have progressed we have had a team working alongside them to put into production a road legal NRV 588.

Initially we will be doing a limited edition production, these will all be hand built in our new factory at Donington Park in 2010.

As and when we have further information available we will send all enquirers our updated information pack on the all new Rotary engined NRV 588.

To join our enquirers list please follow the links below.
The down side is that limed edition production and hand built make it sound like this will be an expensive bike.

Nice concept, but this is a mere experimental model. I hardly doubt it will make it to the showrooms with other street bikes until all technical parameters have been sorted out to achieve a reliable street machine.
In the mean time, I'll stick with my duc.

delhi 04-17-2009 06:34 PM

So Norton is diversifying from making anti-virus software to making rotary motobikes?

Thankfully no, otherwise they would be huge, overly bloated POS motorcycles :lol: :spank:

Quite possibly yes. Like bimota and moto guzzi limited production always equates to an exorbitant price tag. The bike is not that pretty anyway.

Gigolo Jason 04-20-2009 10:53 AM

I sent Norton an inquiry this morning for the road bike,

I will report what information I get back from them.

Hopefully they will sell it to a US buyer.

are you really going to buy it if they make you an offer?

CyberPitz 04-21-2009 12:48 PM

Boy, that will be one expensive bike if they sell it.

If they will allocate me one, depending on price, then yes. They still havn't published the MSRP.

I can get it registered and get plates for it.

It would be a garage queen that I would take to meets, rides, and to track days.

It shouldn't really be that expensive. The last Bimota Tesi sold for 37K. This shouldn't be more expensive then that.

I would rather a 1098r Bayliss edition for that price. But then again, just like a Bimota, I hardly doubt you will see another Norton in your city, perhaps not even in the state. They are highly exclusive exoticas.

corrine4 06-15-2010 02:05 PM

I was pretty sure that norton produced security for computers... anyways everyday we learn something new.

terch1 06-15-2010 02:30 PM

Are you kidding a random dumb ass post a year after the last post to this thread? People are idiots!
