Nissan adding "self healing clearcoat" to its vehicles
 

This was in an article about new tech that Nissan will be adding to its cars over the next couple of years-

overhead cameras for parking and alcohol sniffers and nudgers in case you are faling asleep amung others

but i found the paint thing very intersting

...wish mazda had that

I'm sure that if its a success, Mazda and all other manufacturers would have their own version by 2010

i heard it even heals light key scratches that only damages the clear coat.
what im really intrigued by is the color changing paint nissan is working on.

i really like the paint idea.

as far as all these cams everywhere go, im sick of it. if people stopped sucking at driving and the state actually challenged people on their road test, we wouldnt have idiots on the roads crashing cars, hurting people, etc. cars would cost cheaper because cameras and all other unecessary equipment wouldnt need to be built in with the vehicle.

I have seen similiar paint/clearcoats. Never on a factory paint job though.

Back a few years ago the only problem they had with it was that it would go hazy over time. Then your clearcoat was a foggy coat. If they have it fixed, this would be great stuff. It is designed to slowely 'melt' back in to place. But this means that the paint is always wet. It never dries completely. It works great on little scratches, by getting rid of the sharp edges a scratch leaves in paint. But it is something that I want to see after 10 years in the sun before I put it on my car.


And color changing paint has been out for a LONG while. Does Nissan have a NEW version of it??

The new on this was first released a couple years ago and I'm sure they had been working on it for a while before that. I don't doubt it works, but I can just see idiots going around scratching Nissans to see if it really works... :icon_no2: I can just see people with keyed cars going into their Nissan dealers claiming that the clearcoat doesn't work.
