New Supra? Could be rebadged as lexus 400hp hybrid or 500hp V8

Is Toyota's Volta show-stopper the next-gen Supra?

Sources tell AutoWeek that Italdesign-Giugiaro’s Toyota Alessandro Volta hybrid gas-electric sports car, named our Most Significant car at the Geneva motor show (AW, March 15), is even more significant than we could have imagined.

Word is the high-performance hybrid has been spotted circling the Toyota test track in Arizona at speeds in excess of 180 mph and that the car is actually a mildly disguised version of a new Supra.

While a 400-hp hybrid sports car powertrain remains possible by 2007, we also hear rumors of a wild 500-hp mid-engine V8 Supra that would sell for more than $100,000.

I like it but it looks to smashed down or flat

Psylence 04-02-2004 05:29 PM

Thats some ugly shit...

Plus, who wants a hybrid powertrain? You can't modify that!

Slick_Advanced 04-02-2004 06:21 PM

Figuring what gas prices will look like in the next 4 years. I would suspect almost everyone.

They will find ways to modify it just like we have done in the past.

I don't see any reason why not. The car still has a normal gas motor, it can be tuned just like any other.

Hornet 04-03-2004 05:55 AM

I like it! Looks kinda like an exotic.

guy321 04-03-2004 06:25 AM

well, for 100k it better not look like a camry!

draco067 04-03-2004 07:27 AM

100k? Guess I'll cross that one off the list.

bdeitemeyer 04-03-2004 09:34 AM

I like it, I just wish they'd officially announce some sort of Supra replacement to go into production.

Hornet 04-03-2004 12:44 PM

As much as I liked the Supra, that seems a little crazy on Toyota's part. They should start the car shown in the pic as it's own entity. The Supra name belongs in the mix with the likes of the 300Z (350Z) and the RX-7 (RX-8). I guess they must be going after the likes of the Porshe 911 Turbo.

jonnyb 04-03-2004 02:25 PM

that is not the next supra.

1. toyota already said they will not be bringing the supra back.

2. that car is midengine while the supra wasnt

here is better information about the car

I know Toyota has said it won't be coming back but I just don't believe it. They're just waiting to get it right before even hinting at the possibility of a new Supra. The Supra TT is legendary and Toyota risks a lot of ridicule if they don't outdo it with a new version, whether that takes 2, 5, or 10 years it will happen some day.

i sure hope they bring it back. i dont know why they wouldnt bring it back when people are paying almost the same price for it used as they did new.

If and when it does come back I expect it to be out of reach for most of us. Maybe there is some truth to the Volta being a disguised Supra concept. One thing I feel confident about is that Toyota will now lower their standards and play in the arena of the 30k 350Z, EVO, STi, and RX-8 type cars. I would more expect a car that will compete with the likes of the new NSX in price and performance.

s13lover 04-03-2004 03:12 PM

From info I've read in various magazines Toyota will have a new hybrid sports car around 2007. However it seems like every magazine has its own opinion on the Supra name coming back. The car won't look like the Volta concept because that car is actually very similar to the new Lexus supercar. Thats right, there won't be a 100,000 mid-engine Supra because Lexus is making a car to fill that niche. As for the Toyota Sportiva (the one in that second link) the new magazine by Road and Track, Speed, shows a car very similar to that saying it will be the next Celica with a possible 230 hp!

they have been kinda. the spyder is almost in that price range but its a shame that it has so little power.

Ike 04-03-2004 06:15 PM

Whoops... that's supposed to say NOT, not NOW. It's amazing what a difference 1 little letter can make :D

yeah but drop a 2zz in that little baby and it will be a SERIOUS threat

PhineasFellOff 04-05-2004 06:02 PM

With all the speculation, sounds like Toyota has things (and consumers) exactly where it wants them.

Toyota is so big and strong that I don't think they need to play with the 350Z, RX8, STi, and Evo. They don't need a sports car that sells. I think they'll go for more of a supercar icon to spice up its image like the Viper did for Chrysler.

Like in my business, the actions and decisions of the giants always leave holes and niches for the little guys to thrive in. This is a concept that I think is especially critical to Mazda and the rotary. It's part of a scenario that will provide the RX7 an opportunity (although doesn't guarantee it) to live.

kellybrf 04-06-2004 08:54 PM

you can still find stock supras selling for close to $50k, so why would they reintroduce it in the $30-40k range? the supra has always been a car ahead of its time, so i would not be at all suprised if they would introduce it as a hybrid (especially considering gas prices+emissions standards.) my 83 had only 45hp less than our 82 308 gtsi. im not going to say it was the first, but the mark iv supra was the first six-speed that i know of, and i would dare to say it was the first major-production six-speed a good five years ahead of anything else.

if they do it right, the supra will never be in the same class as the 8/350/sti. its just a whole different beast. short of the exotics, it and the nsx still have a good claim to the best sports car available.

and who cares if you cant modify it? honestly, who needs more than 400-500 hp. unless youre racing, you just dont need it.

HOLLA, THE SUPRA IS BACK!!!!! :)

SixOne 04-10-2004 03:33 PM

Maybe it will compete with INFINITI'S!! GTR. I fully beleive the true Skyline (AWD) will be brought to the U.S under the Infiniti badge...unfortunately....its too bad that the U.S. works in a way that nobody wants to buy a $50k toyota or nissan.

Because there are only a handful of people in the country that are willing to pay $50k for a Supra and Toyota would have to sell a few more than that for the car to be economically feasable. :p

Also, the main reason for the high resale value of Supras is the 2JZ-DTE engine, which is not made anymore.

Boozehound 04-13-2004 12:57 PM

Holy crap batman!!! 50K for a used supra? I used to read the classifieds all the time and the last time I checked, the TT supras were going for 23-27. But 50?!? Maybe I should quit my job and buy some supras and truck them up to Ohio...

kellybrf 04-13-2004 02:26 PM

my stearing gearbox went out causing me to need a new front end and in that process i was looking at new ones. most were in that $25-30k range, but there was more than a few selling for $45-55k. obviously most had mods done, but there was a red tt w/only a few trd parts going for $52k

s13lover 04-13-2004 02:55 PM

I remeber seeing one at a dealer near my college a few months ago going for $49,500. It was a TT with like 60,000 miles but I was some really rare purple color. Else than that the car was stock.
