The new Lexus IS is supposed to debut at the Geneva auto show next week, and I stumbled across some pics of what it may look like

hideous

therm8 02-24-2005 12:32 PM

It looks ok, in the way that the Acura TL/TSX and G35 sedan look ok. Since it looks like a cross of the two/three. 2 thumbs down for lack of imagination.

Not a ripoff, all the new cars are starting to look basically the same, check out the new GS

Gheist 02-24-2005 01:11 PM

That's awesome! I've always wanted to pay $30K for a scion Tc!

DreRX8 02-24-2005 01:21 PM

horrible. Lexus really sucks at styling nowadays--at least they are good cars otherwise. Bring back Lexus of 1998.

AQA101 02-24-2005 03:59 PM

I actually like the looks and if I ever change from the 8 to another vehicle, the IS is quite near the top of my list of alternatives.

khtm 02-24-2005 05:34 PM

Meh.

I showed this picture to my client today who is Japanese, and is here on a business visit to our plant here at work. He believes that it is actually based on the Scion TC platform. I seem to believe him cause it looks very similar to the Scion. He said he will verify it for me before he leaves.

Yet funny you think it looks anything remotely like the Acura TL. The only thing that resembles the TL are the first two cutlines on the doors.

Gambit is right on.

The new IS looks fine. It is not a ripoff. Has many elements that other cars have, but of course other cars don't have the combination of those elements that this car has. It has a novel variation of the extreme cut-back on the C-pillar that creates a thick triangular C-pillar (that mags have said are recently popular in Japan) that produces an effect that is actually somewhere between the traditional back-curl of BMW's and the more substantial "Japanese triangle effect" of the Mazda 3 hatchback. Has the raised side hoodlines running into the A-pillar first seen ine previous generation BMW 5-series and now seen on a ton of cars from the Honda Accord to a bunch of Volvos. Conservative Lexus grille does not detract from the overall pleasant and solid look of the car. Taillight shape (whether or not you like Altezza) is very good.

Scion TC is FWD,I will be surprised if the Lexus is..
The Scion is only 174" long,106" wb.I will be surprised if the new IS is smaller than the old modell...

mikeb 02-24-2005 06:53 PM

looks just like a scion tc

Have you guys seen a tc lately? The only thing it resembles is the shape. What do you expect from the same company? Camry's always es330s, landcruisers to lx470, etc, etc. I'm not even going to get into the rear.. but look at the hood lines, the headlights, grille, etc. Not to mention the 215 hp in it now. I imagine it will have around 230 hp figure. And it looking like the TL/ S40 is more far-fetched

.. How do you post full-size pics anyway?

rx8wannahave 02-24-2005 08:36 PM

I think it's better looking than the current car...and I like it, I still would prefer a G35 4dr...but I think it looks good.

Japan8 02-25-2005 07:26 AM

Looks like ass... like just about all current Toyotas. Previous car looks better.

SHOWOFF 02-25-2005 11:24 AM

It looks like a damned Camry. Get rid of the ghey ass waterfall grill in the front. I like the rear of the car though.

AdictiveRx 02-25-2005 11:49 AM

Can you say....Scion TC

PoorCollegeKid 02-25-2005 01:08 PM

I really like the way the new IS looks, but I still think that the previous iteration of the IS series looked better. The new GS looks a lot like the new Maxima from the windshield back, but Toyota has always been fairly conservative with their sedan designs so it's no surprise that the GS uses design cues from other successful Japanese models.

Reactionary 02-25-2005 01:13 PM

The new IS looks fine. It will look just fine in person.
