The accountants - make some profit after filing all that $$$ paperwork. Instead of that projects InternalOrder profit center having a -$3623453 amount, it might have only -$748453. Less loss. (calculations assume a profit of 5750 per car to Mazda corporate and a sale of 500 cars in 2019/20.).

As for emissions, 90% of the old diesel cars I have seen spit soot everywhere so they suck at that department anyway. Not that I can judge them much as a rotary owner, but at least we spit cool flames, not soot.
Unless they redesign the cars to be able to put one in, and Mazda actually decides to go luxury.
You can't just out an I6 in a car designed for I4, and you will need a longitudinal configuration, something no current Mazda use other than the MX-5, obv.

I agree - the last Diesel with it all was the 1998-2003 Golf Diesel. It has the grunt and MPG and was an all-around great car. Simple Diesel technology and required only the water pump/intake cleaning every 120K miles.

The CX-5 Diesel is way overpriced at $43000 out the door prior to taxes. If it was line priced with a mid-tier - I'd seriously consider it. They also reduced the warranty to 2/30 from 3/36 - which is a real deal breaker.

You need to reread the Mazda website.
The 2 years, 30k is NOT the warranty coverage, it is the free maintenance period.

Mazda's goal is to sell only 10% of CX-5 as diesels. That is approximately 13,000-15,000 diesel variants of the CX-5 a year, which is not very ambitious.
It's quite obvious that they're just shoe horning the diesel engine in just to have a recognizable and experimental footing in the US market, thus paving the path for future products. Keep in mind that the current gen CX-5's life cycle is at its final or second to final year.

Agreed. It's really dependent on states and their availability of "cheap" diesel.
In New York for example, diesel cars aside from commercial trucks are an extreme rarity due to the lack of refueling availability and an entirely different mentality towards diesels.. A few miles away in New Jersey where diesel is available at nearly every station for the equivalent of gasoline prices, it's not uncommon to see a diesel car. Same applies to certain areas of California.
