New GM advertising

The commercials that GM has been running lately have started to get a little annoying to me. My main issue is that they claim their car is better than some car from another company but the comparisons are so weak that it means nothing.

For example... they compare a full sized SUV to a mini and say that it gets the same gas mileage but in a larger vehicle. Now if all they wanted to say was "you can enjoy a fuel efficient car that has cargo space" then that's fine. But they go on to use their new tag line "my the best car win". That implies that these are competing cars in the same category. I don't think most people who are buying a mini, the small sporty hatch-back, are interested in GM's non-sporty, cargo-oriented SUV.

I'm sure overall it's actually a decently successful campaign, but their comparisons are so weak that it annoys me.

Anyways, /endrant.

I hear you I completely agree. Its just one of those tactics that stupid people believe. I mean toyota should come out with a commercial saying we've been getting 35mpg for years but chevy well they been busy and it cuts to a chevy truck driving in the mud lol

they do need a new advertising agency for real lol theyre making some good products recently and need to represent em better!

yeah, i saw that ad too. i was like this.

its one thing to say your car is great. its another thing to try to put down your competitors. its very unsportsmanlike.

to me, it just shows how bad they are hurting. and they are, who are they kidding with their new chevy cruze? that thing looks like such an uninspired POS.

rotarykillz 01-21-2010 07:09 AM

LOL Dude....they mean a small/mini SUV.

Get the same fuel economy of a small SUV in a full size SUV. They aren't competing with the Mini Cooper.

Other than that, they are saying in other commercials that they get better gas mileage than the other cars in their respective categories:

Malibu to Accord
Traverse to Pilot

They seem to be picking on Honda the most.

I drove a 2009 Malibu and it was a nice ride...I was impressed.

I don't see a problem with their advertising campaign...it's all about fuel economy in their ads, which what more people want these days, so it seems pretty smart to me.

^true it's about fuel economy. But that's like comparing the rx8 to an Toyota Camry. Yes, they both have doors, but are by no means in the same class.

rotarykillz 01-21-2010 07:33 AM

Actually accord and Malibu are the same class of car. Not quality, but...class

This is an MPG battle, yes.

Hyundai made the claim that they're the most fuel efficient brand in the US market. Because they don't offer a full size truck or SUV, I can see how this would technically be true. Sort of.

I mean, what about Lotus or technically, "Smart" is its own brand.

Anyhow. The GM tagline "may the best car win" only really refers to one category in each ad.
The Ad with the Traverse and Pilot, they're just saying, "Traverse is bigger and gets the same MPG". . . BUT, Honda will probably have more features, fewer problems, better fit&finish, and way better re-sale value. . .

So, did the best car win? I always look for something American before I turn to Japan. (Anything German is overpriced for me.)
Americans know trucks... If I need a full size truck, it won't be a Nissan or Toyota, and same goes for a Full size capable SUV.
I mean, look at the American competition to the RX8. . . crossfire, solstice? Only if you can live with a two seater... Mustang? Now Camaro? Eh. . . Still pretty large cars in comparison.

I don't know, I don't know if GM will be able to pull themselves out of this one. Especially with Cobalts and Aveos still hitting the streets, ready to fall apart on their owners after 4-5 years.

I still find it funny that GM's main argument in their ad campaign is simply that their cars get 1 more mpg than the competitor car they pick to compare. I really got sick of the one where Howie Long goes and says "However, Honda does make something that we can't compete with, its self propelled" and he shows up with the lawnmower. I mean, god, Honda makes super bikes, corporate jets, jet skis, etc. I'd like to see GM compete in any of those markets and make a profit....... Oh wait, they can't even do it with their cars, duh!

Look at the bottom of this page. "RX-8 vs. Camero Find out how the Camero measures up against the compitition now." Their whole ad campaign is Our car vs. whatever. Kind of turns me off.

Who gives a fawk about mileage :)

Symbioticgenius 01-22-2010 12:53 AM

"These companies are too big to fail"

So let them get smaller...

ANZ 01-22-2010 05:33 PM

For me this works like an anti-commercial. Why would I want to buy this product to be in the same group with those who fall for this crap?

CyberPitz 01-22-2010 06:58 PM

"Oh yeah? My dad can beat your dad up ANY day!"

or on a more homo note

"Oh yeah? My **** is bigger than yours, see!?"

All sounds about the same from GM's mouth.

Razz1 01-22-2010 07:23 PM

It seems to working as sales are up drastically.

Besidess you forget the main point.

People think US cars are gas hogs so they never even test drive or go to an American car dealership.

Tehy are trying to get people in the show room.

They have succeded.

Besdies we all know that lawnmower flies!
