new BMW 335ci Hard Top Covertible Weights 4,000lb!!!

I was going to post this, but its so rediculous I am b/c I feel like venting.

How the hell can you have a 3 series BMW that weighs 2 f&$king tons!!!!! This is insane, cars have gotten so heavy is getting out of control. :spank: :spank: There are convertible American muscle cars from the 60's that weigh less than this.

You need a 300HP turbo torque moster just to move the damn thing. Its like the new Charger/300/Magnum, that thing have a Hemi? Yeah, it has too, to pull its fat ass of of the garage.

I can live with a 3 series coup/sedan in the 3400lb range, but this is beyond stupid and really makes me question the sanity of BMW engineers. Can you imagine what the M3 convertible is going to weigh with a V8? God all mightly......

then don't buy one :)

440 extra pounds for the hardtop... they made it out of lead?!!

How much does the new hard top add to a Miata?

I won't. and I may never buy a BMW either in protest.

70ish pounds.

mysql101 01-05-2007 02:23 PM

230 hp with 4000 lbs ... it's a screamer.

Clavius 01-05-2007 02:35 PM

New age German version of the lead sled

Ajax 01-05-2007 02:50 PM

funny, my parents have the X5 with the small engine (i think it's the exact same 230 hp engine that these have) and it weighs about the same (which is freakin scary, i think it's 4400lbs) and it's no slug. Granted, it's not exactly fast, but it's in no way slow. I guess BMW did their homework when it came to gearing these things.
That said, I'm sure the fuel economy sucks and I'm with the general consensus these days that cars are too heavy.

playdoh43 01-05-2007 03:02 PM

bmw tend to underate their engines and sometimes qoute whp. im pretty sure the majority of people that are interested in the 3 series could care less about the curb weight.

yeah but still... how does it add up to 4000lbs ?

playdoh43 01-05-2007 03:25 PM

hehe about the same as a rs4 minus like 200hp

sunilseru 01-05-2007 03:59 PM

That's just disgusting... And the roof is supposedly made from lightweight steel :) Guess its the structural reinforcements that's making the car so heavy. No doubt it will be quick, but wonder how it feels to drive one.

The E92 M3 will not be much heavier than the 335i coupe. It has a CF roof just like the M6 so will loose some weight there to offset the heavier V8.

CAM427R 01-05-2007 04:02 PM

Cars are getting heavier and bigger to avoid new MPG restrictions. The cheap way manufacturers avoid the new restrictions is by stretching and adding weight to the cars to change their classification. They have little incentive to make a lightweight car.

It's still faster than rx8s! :p

TeamRX8 01-05-2007 06:54 PM

it's a retractable, folding hardtop not a removable shell, yet it's the stiffest chassis BMW has ever built including all coupe/sedan models

and no, even with the turbo engine at 4000# it's not faster than an RX-8, especially once you start to turn

Design1stCode2nd 01-05-2007 10:30 PM

I'm pretty sure the e93 335i convertible will be faster than the RX8. The coupe does 0-60 in 4.8 or 4.9 and you can always up the boost a tad.

The problem with modern cars is they need to be stiffer, safer, more air bags, pedestrian crash laws, etc, etc. and all that adds weight. Not saying it could be lighter but it's not intended to be a performance car its a luxury drivers car.

Did you drive one? How can you say that it is not faster than the 8? :spank:

:)

That 3.0L turbo is a beast. Only time will tell how reliable it is. It is putting down insane numbers with just the xede piggyback!

Cars are getting heavier because safety is more and more important these days. Everyone wants a 5 star crash test rating......even for convertibles. All those electronic gadgets we love so much......wiring in a vehicle accounts for 150-300lbs depending on power equipment. How many airbags did you need sir? 8? OK add another 200lbs. Go look at cars that are light weight......then go look at crash test ratings. I agree cars have gotten heavy.......but that's so we can all stay alive through most accidents. Guys that race the new Mustang have removed most of this crap and gotten their track weight under 3000lbs. It's a trade-off between creature comforts and safety vs weight. It's called compromise friends.....unless you're prepared to spend big $$$.

Agree with most of the stuff you said, but safety equipment might not equate to more stars in some cases

2006 S2000 side impact - 5 stars without airbags
2006 Z4 side impact - 3 stars with airbags

Maybe I am not interpreting the ratings right........

I see what you're saying.....but you have to compare the same vehicles with and without airbags. What is the crash test ratings of the Z4 without side airbags?

I am blown away that an S2000 has 5 star side impact with no side airbags......that is amazing!!

Typically the same vehicle will do better in the crash test ratings with more airbags vs less.

It kills me how people complain and bitch about cars that havent even been released or tested yet. STFU and wait for some numbers; if they dont look good then commence the bitching.

Its heavy, big fucking deal. Name a hardtop convertible that has room for four and a trunk that isnt. BMW has proved time and time again that a heavy car can still handle well and put down some decent acceleration.
