I just sold an E46 after I bought my eight. My wife and I still own an E46 convertible.

I think the E90 looks decent. I think it has Angel eyes which I think look really awesome.

Personally, I think that the sedan is not too great but with a little drop, some rims and a nice bodykit it will look really good.

I'm really waiting to see what the coupe looks like.

We might replace the E46 vert with an E90 coupe or sedan.

The designers for just about every car including the current 3-series understand that the portions of the headlight and taillight that go around the edge of the car onto the side plane have to be balanced with each other. In the new car, the headlight part is sharp and jagged and extends quite a way into the side plane while the tailiight part is much less angular, even sort of weak, and barely enters the side plane. This is a total mismatch that no magazine has even mentioned. If I cover the front half of the car with my hand, the rear looks like it's from a $13,000 econobox such as the '92 Honda Civic or '88 Toyota Tercel. Real cheap looking. Directly from behind, it just looks weird and crappy. Those taillights are a real mistake. That integrated trunk spoiler with the concave undersurface is just a meaningless attempt to reinforce and justify the ill-conceived side plane horizontal door line. I'm too tired to complain about the interior, so I'll leave that for others.

It is subjective. Maybe the new 3 series isn't your cup of tea, but someone else might like it.

Most people who buy bmw's don't care what they look like, they are usually more interested in the badge. Just goes to show you that evolution does not always produce better results.

Obviously there's room for debate, since a debate involves two opposing sides and differing points-of-view.

Let's face it, not everyone is going to agree with you and Im one of those people. I love everything post-Bangle and wish I could meet him in person to give him a pat on the back. He took a line-up of good-looking but conservative cars and turned them all into something worth talking about. And obviously people are talking, since sales are higher than ever and profits are rolling in.

People place way too much emphasis on styling anyway. Like the saying goes, there's an ass for every seat. Where some see hideous, others might see a masterpiece. Case in point, the M-B CLS: magazines call it 'beautiful' but to my eyes it's as beautiful as a sumo wrestler's big jiggly ass.

You're almost qualifying Bangle's designs. I get the feeling that when you say you love all of Bangle's designs you really mean that you don't think they are all beautiful but rather they are avant garde and thought-provoking. In the second paragraph, for the first time, it seems you are kind of in agreement with many people who think it isn't Bangle's controversial designs that are behind BMW's sales. Rather it's the reputation of the 3-series before the current 3-series (that allowed BMW to beat Mercedes in overall sales for the first time in history) combined with the reputation of the last generation 5-series and the current 3-series that's really behind the sales. Are you sure the the current 5-series is selling that well compared to the midlevel Mercedes? I don't know the sales numbers. It seems that while you like all the Bangle designs, you also understand why a lot of people don't like them.

I think the CLS side profile already looks old before it's even come out yet.

I like the pic that BlueEyes posted. It really shows how nicely the 3-Series has evolved to what it is today. When placed next to all those other 3's, the latest design looks pretty elegant and a rather nice rendition of the 3-Series for today's generation, in my opinion. I've seen worse designs in my lifetime. It may take a little time for the look to gel in some people's minds too.

My issue is with the interior design (mainly the instrument panel). It kinda takes away from the sporty-feel the previous cars always had.

ok ok lets cut to the chase ,everyone knows that the only version that matters will be the new M3 :) Untill i see that im going to hold off on flamming bangle. But to his credit he did have a hand in designing the E46.

Heard the M3 wouldn't come until 2007? If that means calendar year, that's a long time from now.

BlueEyes 03-31-2005 11:32 AM

there have been some shots of the new m3 masked in disguise. I hope it will be a monster, rumor has a 400hp v8 in there. Should be good.

On a side note, I was talking to a racing instructor freind of mine. He works at a school where you bring your own car and they teach, then test for your regoinal racing liscense. He said M3 drivers have the highest fail rate, and overall, they are awful drivers!!

Saint_Spinner 03-31-2005 12:03 PM

I still can't believe you all believe that Bangle designed those cars....Ok, the world of automotive design, there is no single designer. He led the team, but the most he probably did was a stroke on a napkin and called it Flame design. He's a great "talker" and "businessman", but talking to some of his alumni, his "designs" during school were average. Thus said, I like all the new Bangled out cars (least favorite is the 7 series though)

policyvote 03-31-2005 01:09 PM

I think the last non-Bangled generation of BMWs were gorgeous , but sort of the pinnacle of that design. They could have made those cars for twenty years and they'd still look great. I think they're stretching for something different, something new. Finding the line between what is possible and what is right . . .

I think the industry is going through a real crisis of identity now . . . we have the technology now to mass-produce all of those crazy-looking futuristic concepts that the industry has been scuplting and drawing for decades, but the question is "should we?" It's a very very very fine line between advancing the art and making Aztecs.

The e36's are looking really tired now days. If they kept making them for 20 years BMW would not exist anymore.

Well, thats what you get with an over publicized car... you have almost every magazine raving about how easy the M3 is to drive, and how its the supercar for idiots...
Sure you will get these morons who buy second hand M3 the first chance they get and think they are Michael Schummacher... and even though they slip, spin, bang, boom... they still think they are Michael Schummacher because .... its an M3!

I own an M3 too, and I think I drive better than most people around me so I dont think M3 drivers are less well mannered than say an Evo or Scooby drivers.
But on a side note, my local BMW car club has like 5 assholes with M3s ;)

BlueEyes 03-31-2005 11:23 PM

I wasn't implying that they all are like that, just that there seems to be a disproportionately large amount of poor drivers in m3's.
I am trying to buy one of these right now...
(yes yes, stop posting pics of old m3's everywhere blueeyes..it's just so pretty :))

The first car I ever drove on a track was an E30 M3, and they're a blast and I love the styling and those fender flares are a big part of why I love my WRX. It was also the first serious car I ever beat in a street race when I was young and stupid, now I'm just stupid ;)

You know about this car right Blueeyes? It recently was sold for 45k and the guy did a 2.5L swap on it and plans to track it :(

That bubble car is immaculate!
I can't believe someone is going to race that thing. I am not one for garage queens, but that should have stayed in its bubble.

Fuckin' A man. When I first saw the back of the 7 series I thought the trunk was open, the lines just don't fit. The only bangled bmw that I think looks good is the 6 series and its hella expensive.

I'll tell ya something. The new 6-series front fascia looks crude, rough and already out of date, like a late 80's early 90's car with a bodykit. And that interior is about as ice cold as the Z4's.
