Do you know why they lowered the redline of the engine in the Legacy? The redline at 6500 is the same as the other 2.5L H4s in Subaru's various models, lower than the 7000 rpm redline in the STi's 2.5L H4. I'm just wondering why Subaru's engineers felt the need to drop the redline.

That is a good question. that has been thrown about here at www.legacysti.com . But, I just feel that tourqe delivery is at a much lower RPM and it reaches its maximum HP lower so the need to ring it out that high is not there.

Plus, I think they STI is supposed to have a sportier feel, and good sports cars have high red lines.

Different cam lobes.
The engine basically has porsches variocam+ system, camswitching and camphasing on the intake side.
There is little diffence in maximum boost 1-2 psi, not enough to account for 50hp (and 500rpms), considering the better intercooler of the Legacy.

WOW MIKE!! :) AWSOME POST!

The boxing 6 has this, and so does the WRX STi, so why not the Legacy? This would allow for better mileage and emissions, and STi matching power. Maybe the manual cannot handle over 275ft-lbs of torque.:(

Well, lets keep in mind that it is a DE-TUNED STI engine..thay may be part of the DE-TUNING.

If the engine internals are heavier, it wouldn't be able to rev as high as the sti's engine.

From what I've read, the internals of the engine are exactly the same. The different cam timing makes sense and seems to be the prevailing theory so far (although the Legacy GT still uses the AVCS system), but I was wondering if anyone has actually opened the engine up and verified that the cams in the Legacy GT are indeed different from those in the STi.

I am sure they just tune down the power so they can up it on the later model and keeps selling these cars. Not to mention they don't want to out spec their flat 6 version which has the same horse power.

9-K Rever 06-29-2004 02:45 PM

It already out specs the 6 cyleder version. The turbo 4 has more tourque.

The 6 cylender is just a marketing ploy.

I am haveing my car detailed today, I will get pics up as soon as its done.

Yes I'm talking about horsepower. You know most people don't even care and know of the torque numbers.

9-K Rever 06-29-2004 04:47 PM

But, its the same HP Hanzo..they both have 250 hp!

Yes I know, that is why I say they don't want to "out gun" it. They are the same.

But Hanzo.. what I am trying to say is the H6 is out classed by the turbo B4. The H6 is a heavier car, and it has less tourqe. The B4 sedan is lighter has the same HP and more Torque. The H6 is just here for the american market for those people that think 6 is better than 4...

Like I said, people only look at HP numbers they don't know if it is heavier or has less torque.

And the American marketing thing, I was the one that told you that last time. Ralph agrees with me as well.

Very nice, it’s a shame that they can't make the WRX and STi look as nice. Congratulations.
