Mercedes SL55

Just saw a Mercedes SL55 AMG up close and personal today. Wow, what a beautiful looking car. The interior was something to die for IMO. It's just too bad that I'm helping pay for that doctors ride

Don't forget the SLK 350...My oh My..........

Don't forget about the E30 M3. All your base belongs to old school Bimmers.

RXE16T 01-05-2005 06:48 PM

I'll take the SL65 anyday....... V12 Twin turbo, wow.

Straight8 01-05-2005 07:58 PM

Soon as I see an SL65 in person I'll weigh in on that one Nojooc. The pics I've seen of the 55 don't do it justice. In fact a lot of the pics I've seen don't look like the car I saw today. Damn...I almost humped that thing!

Difference between the SL65, and SL55 is about $60K. Tough to swallow for us mere mortals. Interior is pretty much identical. The SL65 does come with 19" vs. the SL55's 18" rims. The SL 55 with a chip & intake from Renntech goes to 560 hp, 600 lb. ft. of tq., while the SL 65 with Renntech chip goes to 650 hp, & 840 lb. ft. of tq. Huge amounts, but if it was my money I would get the SL55, chip it and call it a day (and save the $60K).

I was just doing some work for one of our company’s customers who owns one so I spent the week riding in it a lot and DRIVING it a little. This was the SL55 AMG. I would say that it had enough power without jumping to the SL65. It was defiantly fun to drive. We were testing vehicles so we had a slalom course and a short lane change course set up and I got to push it through both. The owner, wanting to show the car’s brute strength took off the traction control and laid rubber that cost more than some cars. In any case – FUN, and so far out of my reach. . .

FYI, the fuel economy gauge on the dash was reading 10.5mpg so really about the same as the RX-8 on a bad day in winter.

A guy in the building I live in has a SL65, bright red. Personally, I like very much the Mercedes red, especially on this car. They look very sleek and classy, a body style that I don't think will ever look bad, just timeless. Never run into him to ask for a ride, but I've seen him pulling out under throttle and it sounds mean.

Awesome cars. I don't know why it's too bad you're helping pay for it though.

I guess I'm on my own here. I actually don't like it.
But I do appreciate the engineering.

I for one don't like the fact it has PLASTIC strakes! 200 thousand dollars for the car and it has plastic accents, give me a freaking break!

Other than that, the car is gorgeous. Much like the many ladies I see driving them :D

canaryrx8 01-18-2005 02:42 PM

saw the sl65 in person at the austin auto show, that thing was nuts! 738 ft lbs of torque! probably comes with an oncall chiropractor to help you with your neck from shifting to 2nd etc. As nice as it was, with a Porsche Gt 10 feet away it was really hard to fully appreciate the merc.

RotorManiac 01-18-2005 09:38 PM

Well I agree with fanman here. Try not to get excited with numbers...

I was reading a great british magazine 'evo' and gave the CL65 only 3 stars outta 5. Reason: great engine, amazing performance and blah blah blah but the chassis couldn't cope with the power and torque. So actually it was good for straight acceleration.
Review woulda been even worse for the SL65...

Of course, those journalists have driven every single supercar in the world, that's why they can make statements like that:o If I could get it, that's a different story.

But in the end, I think Merc's best one is the SLR. Now that is a car to mas***bate screaming its name...

BlueEyes 01-18-2005 09:40 PM

Are the CL and the SL built on the same chasis?

RotorManiac 01-18-2005 09:55 PM

honestly I don't know. the 'review being even worse' is just my opinion. sorry, forgot to mention it.
it's not always the truth, but the general idea is that coupes have better chassis
