Mazda SkyActiv-Diesel thread.

Decided to start a thread dedicated for the popular SkyA-D as it will become available across new Mazda platforms. It is currently available in the CX-5 but not in the states (yet) unfortunately.

I'll start the thread with a new BREAKDOWN video released by Mazda.

And a link from Mazda with all the juicy info.

MAZDA: SKYACTIV-D | ENGINE | SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY

nycgps 09-05-2012 10:27 PM

Saw the video before they pulled it (wtf Mazda?)

EDITED : Ok, yea, I noticed this too, forgot ... There were some caption error (Japanese actually) and they pull that video off and re-upload another one

Well, US is a weird market, people's mindset is so 1960s, so they still THINK "omg Diesel ? they are dirty!" "Diesel = Trucks ONLY" "SROUSLY? DIESEL? WTF?"

So if I am MNAO I would be REAL careful in releasing Anything Diesel related in the states. cuz it will suck if you have like 10000 Diesel stuck at the port (not even at dealer's lot) and not be able to sell them, time is money!

Look at VW, shit their TDI is superior in almost every way than their Gasoline powered version. but hey, it's still outsold the Diesel version. Cuz people are stupid. and it takes an ULTRA long time to change that.

Now (I think) Mazda is trying to build a reputation on the CX-5, I see more and more of them running on highways and stuff. Even Zipcar replaced almost all their older Mazda3 with the newest SkyActiv Version. takes time

but what I hate MNAO the most is ... give us the option to order a freaking MT ... What the F ? seriously?

Outside of NYC, the diesel market is catching up greatly. While I was in California and Nevada. I noticed that most people are fairly educated in new efficient and clean diesels, enough so to possibly consider one in their near future. That will only multiple as word passes. The general American diesel market is definitely climbing at an alarming rate. All the the three big German manufacturers already have diesel's on almost their entire line up.

In my opinion, this is the PRIME time for Mazda to release the diesel for us before any other manufacturer does.

I agree. The timing is excellent and Mazda is not always good with timing. Now they need to present it, with the goal of capturing VW faithful and even Audi potential buyers.

Paul.

This is their best chance at competing directly with the more upmarket cars, using their Skyactiv-D offerings. The other Asian manufacturers are going to be years behind, playing catchup.

I think Mazda could steal lots of owners from VW/Audi for their TDI products just by offering the Sky-D engine in the CX-5, 6, and even the 3. I don't think you can get the TDI in the VW small suv here in the US at all, and if they put it in the 3, that would cover the Jetta TDI crowd well.

But, who knows if they will put it in the 3.

BC.

kvndoom 09-06-2012 08:28 AM

I've been saying forever that VW is low hanging fruit, but for some reason nobody has taken any action to challenge them. Their success with the TDI shows that a market exists.

usnidc 09-06-2012 12:26 PM

I agree with all comments. I think what is keeping more people from buying VW TDI's is the extra cost.

I *think* the reason Mazda has not brought to the US yet is just supply and demand. they are barely able to keep up with demand in Japan, Europe, and Australia where diesel is already accepted, it would do no good to release the SKYACTIV-D in the US only to not have any at dealers to sale.

I also agree that Mazda should allow us in the US to order cars with the manual tranny if they offer them for sale in Europe that way.

SA- Diesel "issues"

1 Attachment(s)
Well, you guys 'may' not be seeing the SA Diesel as intended in North America, there are some very unhappy owners of CX-5 Diesels in Australia (and I think Europe)...

Engine Oil Level "rising" issue, due to fuel wash back into oil pan.

Having to check oil every 1000 KMS (600 miles)

One 0wner having a new engine replaced after 1500 KMS (900 miles)...less than 4 weeks old.

Owners having car at dealerships multiple times for Oil and Filter changes.

Edit: There is an official Mazda fix for owners having this issue.
1. A new Dip Stick - Owners have not been reading correctly.
2. A PCM (car computer) Software Update, to activate DPF Cycle sooner.
3. NEVER purchase a modern Diesel Engined car (any car brand) if you travel less that 20 minutes @ each turnkey.

And this is Sydney on-line paper...
Backlash over Mazda CX-5 diesel oil issues

M-Tip from Mazda Europe..

:banghead:

ASH8 09-06-2012 06:42 PM

You can say that again!..:)

I think some of the issues are owners are doing too many short destinations, a SA Diesel is still a Diesel, they love to keep running HOT.

nycgps 09-06-2012 06:50 PM

Ouch, well, is never easy to have a new product, this is something new to mazda and i think they are now banging their.heads on the wall to try to come up with something to solve this once and for all

ASH8 09-06-2012 06:54 PM

Diesels are not new to Mazda..:)

nycgps 09-06-2012 07:09 PM

Well, when u think about it, it is actually quite normal for older diesel engine to have these oil increasing issue, especially if u take a lot of short trips

Problem is, mazda should have thought about it ane caught something like this during their internal testing and or the in field testing. They should hire more people to test their products before release, the number of "oooops" is limited before people lost faith in your company completely

RIWWP 09-06-2012 07:38 PM

Oil level increases over time? Stick a rotary in there too to compensate!

Sorry, I had to

A bit odd that the issue would not have been caught ahead of time....

Mazmart 09-06-2012 08:47 PM

I'm not even slightly panicked. I'm sure Mazda will have it all resolved by the US entry date. Now I'm glad we waited a year to get it :)

Paul.

SayNoToPistons 09-06-2012 10:55 PM

That is definitely shocking and disappointing news. I certainly hope they do iron out the problems prior to the U.S. release.

I think the SkyA-D is critical to Mazda's recapture of success in the states, or in general. At times like these, they can't simply rely on chassis dynamics, the rotary (which they no longer even make), or the SkyA-G's alone. Being the first Asian manufacturer to bring diesel consumer vehicles to the states will without a doubt amp up their image.

Not to be too negative, but i'm not so sure. those problems are related to ALL diesel (every manufactures has), Subaru is PLAGUED on it's boxer diesel, and the accord of my brother @ 65k km on the odometer had a "forced cleaning"of DPF @ the Honda shop, next time a substitution of DPF is needed..price expected 1000 euros...

same story of GG MY04-09 diesels...:wallbash:

i'm seirous considering a 6 Wagon, but in gasoline form...i don't want to spend time at Mazda Shop.

Diesel are good only with main use on highways or extraurban use. no good if you ride in cities....

ASH8 09-07-2012 04:25 AM

Yes, Manufactures have issues, but, Mazda are pinning a lot of entering new and freshly into the US (NA) market (for the first time)..it would be a disaster for this to occur in US, Mazda just can not afford ANY more financial drains from this region.

Here we have had "Mazda" Diesels since the 1970 (well Perkins in T4100 truck) and their 'own' in passenger cars going back to the 80's, I have never heard of these issues (oil rising), never in my time...the most expensive cost then were Oil Filters and By Pass Filters and Fuel Filters during servicing.

Mazda Australia are asking (and I think it is in owner CX-5 -D handbook) to check your engine oil every 1000 KMS (600 miles), this will NEVER fly in the USA.

Reasonably simple solution:

Oil Level Too High light.

That would at least give the owner an idea that something is going on, and get them to the dealer, who says "Great! We will give you a free oil change, compliments of Mazda."

What doesn't make sense is if the engines are so efficient on fuel usage, why is there so much fuel building up the oil level in the engine in only 600 miles?

Does anyone know exactly how much fuel is being added to the crankcase in this distance? Is it just fuel, or is it other stuff from the combustion process?

Also, is it happening more on the Low power or high power versions of the engine?

/\ The CX-5 PCM monitors diesel oil dilution ratio's and driving condition....and there are dash warning lights.
Every time engine oil is renewed the PCM must be reset by MMDS (IDS).

I am just thinking out loud whether or not this 'world first' SA-D low compression ratio is a little too low, fuel not being burnt and washing past rings which have not bedded in enough yet??.

Probably not an issue for owners who do lots of 'driving', but no good for short distance, cool down, restart, short driving.

PUTIN TO THE RESCUE!

that wont be a problem for SA:)

I thought I saw Putin in pictures and video for the Mazda 6, but I thought it was someone resembling him. He is quite short :).

If in Cx-5 manual there is Written to control the OIL every 1 k km and reportely " increasing OIL level i can assure to you that will be DPF problems after a number of kms. The 2 things are strictly related

zoom44 09-08-2012 08:58 AM

sorry i was thinking 'no urea after treatment' and conflating the two
