Yeah, here we go again, the CEO said 2 YEARS ago there is no plan for any RE as they can not SELL enough, like 100K a year.

The ND, is a model which only just made it, yep the ND would have been shelved if FIAT did not come on board to increase the numbers, whether you believe me or not IT IS ALL A Numbers (units) GAME, and so far the ND has been a mediocre performer, in fact in my neck of the woods, there has been only 50 more ND's sold over the same period as the NC @ 1 year after production....The ND was never designed for a larger power plant, the 4 wheel lug studs are a dead giveaway as to their future (sports car) plans.

A new RE of any kind off the ND platform would mean major changes to every drive train/suspension parts (beefed up).

There is just not the business case for a RX-Vision.

It is dead, they can not get the emissions right, remember 2020-21 MY (roughly) is even tougher than now, Mazda wont trade CAFE standards to permit a dirty RE.
And the last coffin is fuel consumption, oil is set to rise again (worldwide).

And then Kogia repeats what he said 2 years ago...yesterday and today.

Supra? Nope. The last big-wing, small-*****, boy-racer A80, and the plain-looking GT A70 left me cold. The new Supra is likely to look just as ugly as every other POS coming out of Toyota lately. The angular A60 at least looked manly and awesome, even if it wasn't very fast and rusted horribly.

True story: I wanted an A60 Supra bad as my first sports car back in 1994. Sexy as hell. But every one I looked at had major rust. Gaping, fist-sized holes where the front structure met the firewall. That, plus Grassroots Motorsports listing the RX-7 as the most affordable "true" sports car sealed my rotarded fate.

I never see Supras of any generation at the race track. That speaks volumes to me.

Not wanting to keep waiting any longer for Mazda to get its act together is what lead me to buy the Cayman above.



This was my Boxster that I traded in for the '11 RX-8.
There are days when I miss both the Boxster and the RX-8.

Not so much since getting the Cayman, however.

Pickings are getting very slim in the affordable sports car market.

The 370z is getting a little long in the tooth and Nissan haven't been making much noise about a replacement or update (we're already on the "tock" of the product cycle anyway).

The BRZ/FRS is nice but it's lacking... something. 30 HP, I guess.

The ND Miata is nice but man do I dislike convertibles.

I guess the sports car enthusiast is going to have to look elsewhere at pony/muscle cars, hot hatches or move upmarket into a luxury ride.

That's the whole problem here. The affordable sports car market is pretty much dead. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the Z is next to get the axe. My other question is why did Mazda waste so much time showing the Vision?

The affordable used Sports Car market is great though. I mean you can get a clean well maintained 2007-2008 Cayman S for 20k. Not to mention Nismo Z's, M3's, etc. But yeah if you wan a new car it's $$$$

9K is right - affordable used cars a' plenty. I remember back in 2005 when I was drooling and lusting over a new RX-8 (it wasn't the right time for me to purchase new). Family and work got in the way but I cased RX-8s for sale starting in late 2008. The time was right and purchase a 2010 GT gem from a one owner, well maintained, low miles situation. Never regretted it. I would buy a new RX-9 if they offered one. Mazda [cough cough]

I hope the value of the 8 starts to creep up eventually with the demise of the RX.
I wish I was 30 years younger, I seriously believe someone knowlegeable could make some serious side money buying, flipping, and/or restoring 8s.

Yah, used is how it'll have to be. I think the reason why early 2006-2008 Caymans are so cheap (especially relative to 2009+) is the IMS issue.

I don't think the IMS was an issue on the 3.4L Cayman engine.

Based on my research, both the M96 and M97 engine families have the problem. Porsche did away with the IMS altogether with the 9A1 engine family which the Cayman got MY2009 and later.

The issue is millennials don't care to have cars. Uber and Lyft are investing in entire fleets of autonomous cars right now. I would be surprised if my 5yr old ever owns a car or learns how to drive a car. Just Uber your autonomous car where ever you want to go, it comes and picks you up and drops you off. That leaves the affordable sports car for enthusiasts only, and there are less and less of us every day.

That is very true. Working in automation, and driving 40k a year...I am very much for self driving cars...not for me, but for so many people that shouldn't be allowed to drive.

Given the time it takes for R&D and production projects matriculate through corporate systems, even if the new EPA admin were to completely eliminate CAFE, I doubt many auto makers would get anything out the door before the next administration took office. That would present a lot of risk since the next admin may just reinstate them and then the auto makers would have to scramble to comply.
