This tangent was started by the possibility of the new administration relaxing emissions standards, which is a moo point anyway since Europe won't, which is maybe the biggest reason the rotary is dead.

Jus sayin.

IMHO, anyone who thinks the scope of the effects of Global Warming/Climate Change begins and ends with the amount of gas his rotary consumes needs to take his head out of his butt and talk to some people that have *real* problems.

It must drive you nuts that some people actually want clean water and clean air, every day of their lives, and that those people number in the tens of millions across America.

Both parties have idiotic agendas, but clean water and clean air are not idiotic ideas. Only idiots think that they are.

We need to focus on the larger issue - power plants.

Cars are only 22% of the 87% of the total CO2 emmissions from human-derived activities that occur on earth.

I agree but for a few sports cars to never get built because we let power companies off the hook running their plants [CHEAPLY] on "clean natural gas" that creates a ton of CO2 is OK so long as your power bill is low. I like my hobbies: driving, cycling, and motorcycling. I can make more of an impact making my home more efficient.

I'm all for clean air and clean water, as long as laws governing such are well-thought-out, which many are not. As part of that, there needs to be a carve-out for sports cars and other pleasure vehicles produced in relatively low numbers. We should not be deprived of things that contribute to our "pursuit of happiness" in order to contribute 0.0005% improvement to the cause.

Your post is an example of an idiotic argument of feelings. Who the hell honestly does not want clean water and air?

The problem is when the government tries to force unnecessary costs and programs that are not sustainable due to the lack of affordability mainly caused by inferior technology.

Trust me, when the world can afford 100% clean energy entrepreneurs will be the first to make it happen, not the government.

Requiring car manufacturers to hit 55 mpg with todays technology is simply a pipe dream that cannot be afforded. Companies have two options, charge more or go bankrupt. Ultimately these "clean energy laws" are paid for by consumers, not corporations and it's an unnecessary burden. For 1/100th of the cost we could bring China or India's industry from the 40's to even 80's or 90's technology and make a much larger environmental impact.

Enough ranting.

Here is some actual old but newly published rotary news.

You hit the nail on the head, AEE. All the left's "thinking" and policies is not based off logic and evidence, but rather emotions. (e.g. Let's **** away half a billion on a solar panel company that anyone with a 1/4 of a brain of business sense knows would never be a viable plan).

I'm all for the idea of granting a gas mileage & emissions waiver to makers of sports cars in small quantities. IOW, Ferrari should be able to sell 6000 cars/year worldwide, and Mazda 3 rotor RX-7/9s without having to meet stringent criteria that'll eventually force car manufacturers to move toward electric and/or hydrogen vehicles, and do away with the ICE altogether.

So this has been circulating the internet the last couple days. Can anyone confirm if this is legit or not? Or have I been under a rock and this has been already discussed?

Mazda patents show rotary engine for range-extended EV - Autoblog

Link to the patent and diagrams are at the bottom of the article. Looks like the application date was September 2016 and was just published the other day?

Same info Are above posted, I always thought adding a battery assist to the rotary would help more than anything. Torque and better mpg while keeping the high revving greatness of the rotary and the compactness of the rotary is ideal for this implementation. One would hope they are working on a system to take all this into account with a turbo/SC 1.6 liter rotary for around 450hp for the next RX? I am hopeful anyway.

Sorry for the repeat post then. 450 HP would be great, but then again so would a lot of things. I don't ever see Mazda rolling a 450 HP car into production unless it's a halo car (this is a pipe dream) or it's a 3 rotor drivetrain of some sort (once again, pipe dream).

Range extender still isn't new news...

3 years ago, and the article says it was revealed even a year before that. So 4 years ago...
New Mazda2 to plug in - motoring.com.au

I don't think its relevant to a new sports car. Mazda has already said that they don't want a hybrid rotary sports car.

Mazda Engineers Dedicated to Rotary Development - Motor Trend

From Motortrend, basically says there are 50 dedicated engineers working on the Rotary, and they started working for Mazda for the sole purpose of developing the next Rotary, if Mazda nixes the projects, they will most likely leave Mazda. It also says they are not where they want to be in performance of the 16X yet, but didn't give specifics on what that meant (HP, TQ, Emissions, etc).

That article came out over a year ago, didn't it?

Are you saying we would know if Mazda fired those engineers?

I think this thread should be locked until a new rotary sports car from Mazda is released (which will be never).

Worse, it's a rehash from the original source, which was published by Automotive News in October 2015. (And the way the automotive "news" media works, that's probably a rehash of what some drunk Tokyo Auto Show executive told some "reporter" that he overheard it from a prostitute...)

I have an idea, if you don't want to read stuff in this thread, DON'T. If a new rotary is released there will be a new thread you can all complain in.
