Mazda reduces bumper weights 20% thanks to new resin

They have also dropped the time needed to manufacture the pieces by half so they even use less energy in the process

When the material is used for both front and rear bumpers, it contributes to weight reduction of approximately 20%. In the bumper production process, this reduced thickness allows for a shorter cooling period for molding, and by using computer-aided engineering (CAE) technology, the fluidity of the resin material has also been optimized. As a result, bumper molding time, previously 60 seconds, has been halved to 30 seconds, leading to major reductions in the amount of energy consumed in the production process.
The new material will first show up on the CX-5

I'm excited by all Mazda advancements, but, what does this mean?

"When the material is used for both front and rear bumpers, it contributes to weight reduction of approximately 20%."

If it was used in the front it would not contribute to 20%? Is this an average of both?

Paul.

the rear bumper cover being larger overall than the front bumper cover i assumed it meant if the front weighs 1 pound and the back weighs 1.5 pounds that the total weight of 2.5 is 20% less than the previous total for both components
