Mazda enthusiasts fail us, cobb drops support

Wow. Just checked the cobb forums.

Apparently Mazda folk are severely pissing off cobb to the point that they make statements like this:

http://www.cobbforums.com/forums/sho...76&postcount=8

And then it goes downhill fast in a different thread:

http://forums.cobbtuning.com/forums/...9&postcount=17

For quite some time, the MAZDASPEED community has, in large part, been confrontational, disrespectful, unprofessional, vulgar or childish regarding any announcements and/or business decisions COBB Tuning has made on public forums. Responses ranging from outrage and profanity to threats of intellectual property piracy have become the normal reaction when things don't go exactly to their wishes. No amount of professionalism, realism or rationale has worked in turning these communications into more constructive discussions.

Although COBB Tuning is a business, it is made up of enthusiasts that work here and they love what they do. Everyone gets a lot of satisfaction from taking on the hard projects like cracking and controlling the MAZDASPEED ecu and making it do what no one else does. When ongoing criticism to these efforts is "**** COBB" or "I'm going to hack your software and give it away" or "**** these OTS maps" or "Hopefully Cobb will get it's head out of it's ***", it tends to make everyone less enthusiastic about working on it.

We have decided to bring MAZDASPEED development to a close because no one at COBB finds it rewarding to put in the hours and hours of effort just to have so many people spouting negativity and insults.

Was there a thread about this? Are they halting development for just MS3/6 guys, or are the rx8 vehicles included?

RxDoogone 04-10-2009 07:10 AM

WOW... thats pretty gay...
I mean every company gets talked crap about.
In the end people are still gonna buy your product.
They will just lose money

I just got to yesterday's thread where Gary apologizes:

http://forums.cobbtuning.com/forums/...ad.php?t=54133

They plan to add two of the features some wanted, but I didn't notice anywhere in his post that he explicitly retracts the decision to halt future development for the platform.

nycgps 04-10-2009 08:12 AM

Oh well, guess I can go back to my list of upgrades and take AP away and replace it with F-Con V Pro or something.

mysql 04-10-2009 08:34 AM

from what I read, I don't think they include rx8 in the MAZDASPEED group. But I can't be sure.

The AP for the rx8 is still what I would recommend. They aren't dropping support for it, they are just saying no future development for mazdaspeed as there isn't a ROI.

arghx7 04-10-2009 08:37 AM

uh there was no mention of the Rx-8

they are different ECU's, different engines. The Mazdaspeed 3 has a really sophisticated boost/traction control system which I imagine requires a lot of time to crack.

CyberPitz 04-10-2009 10:46 AM

Who uses the maps from COBB for the 8, anyway?

alnielsen 04-10-2009 10:53 AM

^The people that didn't buy it from MM.

Atilla 04-10-2009 10:57 AM

scribed for later reading.

I didn't see them point any fingers at the 8 either...

dozer 04-10-2009 10:59 AM

heard about this 2 days ago, our fedex drive drives a MS3 and he was telling me the whole story

Jedi54 04-10-2009 11:00 AM

knowing Jeff's relationship with Trey and Christian, I doub they'll drop us. Sucks that a few bad apples ruined it for the MS guys though.

dozer 04-10-2009 11:23 AM

just heard from the fedex guy, cobb apologized yesterday...and gave em free sh*t

J03K1LLARX8 04-10-2009 12:45 PM

crazy ish goin on wit MS3. some people just have no respect for things that take time. im just glad to know not to get my AP from them. im getting mine from MM.

Jedi54 04-10-2009 01:03 PM

Joe: but MM buys them from Cobb ;)
Either way, ALL AP's come from them...

CyberPitz 04-10-2009 02:50 PM

They aren't stopping selling the Cobb's, they are stopping support on the maps *or were, whatever...lol*. So MM buys the AccessPort, then MM maps it. nothing would have changed if they stopped supporting RX-8's for any reason.

SayNoToPistons 04-10-2009 07:50 PM

Here's a little something something on MSF.

And an apology from Cobb.

Still pretty much irrelevant to the RX8 community though.

Flashwing 04-11-2009 12:32 AM

For the most part, the development for the RX8 from COBB has reached an endpoint. What we see in terms of changes is the effort of MazdaManiac working with Cobb to resolve various hardware and software issues as they arise. I've seen situations where new versions of the pro-tuner just showed up with new features without much notice.

Frankly I've been shaking my head at the Mazdaspeed community's response to COBB. Cobb was giving them off the shelf maps free of charge (IIRC) and they are all upset that the maps didn't work right away? The 8 community got one lousy map that runs too lean on most cars...that's it. You didn't hear any crying or moaning.

Not to stereotype anyone, but I'm aware that the Mazdaspeed Crowd (the 3 in particular) is a younger crowd and they also tend to be rather inexperienced with their own vehicle and the level of involvement it takes to create those tuns. Wanting things perfect on the first calibration isn't realistic.

Hopefully some people learn their lesson. You harp on a vendor long enough and they will close up shop. Cobb clearly is interested in community interaction as much as product development. When you're getting told all the time your stuff sucks you tend to stop helping those people.

you guys dont listen

DOMINION 04-11-2009 05:52 AM

Looks like the sh!t hit the fan. Talk of this has been going on for some time now. Just made its formal way to the interwebs to settle things.

r0tor 04-11-2009 10:27 AM

i think the same would have happened to the RX8 application without MM.... the OTS maps were downright horrible as well and if it wasn't for Jedd's tunes or the Race software I would have had to sell the damn thing since the OTS maps were way way wayyyyy too lean

jones75254 04-11-2009 10:34 AM

Boo hoo, cry me a river Cobb.

YaXMaNGTO 04-11-2009 12:14 PM

Fascinating... I think the MS3 folks never had to feel as much pain as the RX8 community regarding tuning. You have to go way back to the Canzoomer to realize how bad it really was, and how little support there was. A custom harness for an Emanage was "best in class". I'm assuming the MS3 crowd had tuning options like Cobb in shorter time after the launch of the car, so they just plain don't know how good they have it.

shazy 04-11-2009 01:17 PM

Pretty retarded.
