The thing about ICE is that it has a bigger profit margin when it comes to maintenance. EVs don't need much maintenance, and since it's a relatively new field, it needs a lot of funding, which is why most of the EVs are "lame" - why would they want to pour money into something that won't make them money?

Tesla is fighting an uphill battle. The supposedly economical Model 3 is going for CAN$65k in Canada when they promised it was going to be 35k. For that much money, you can get a used Model S...

Service isn't a money-making operation for the manufacturer, it's a money-making operation for the dealers. It can end up being a net loss for the manufacturer (cough Mazda, cough rotaries), since they have to pay the dealers to perform warranty work. Depending on who wears the pants in the manufacturer-dealer relationship, maintenance-free cars could be an advantage. It's certainly an advantage for the consumer.

You can, and should, get a used S if you can swing it, but the problem is few people are in a rush to let their S's go. So there's way more demand than the used S market can ever hope to fill, hence the Model 3 waiting lists. They announced at 35k US, and MSRP in Canada is 45k CAD, which is exactly what currency conversion works out to. You can certainly option it up to 65k, but that's another story.

I can't figure out why Mazda are doing this. They should really be fighting for the external combustion engine; I hear it's the bomb!

so if the achieve the holy grail torque power and economy they target with the Sky-X, does it mean no more diesel?

Probably. Diesels are disappearing from passenger cars everywhere.
