Mazda Achieves Fastest Year-to-Date Sales since 1994

IRVINE, Calif. (May 1, 2012) - Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported April U.S. sales of 21,506 vehicles, representing an increase of 4.2 percent (up 17.2 percent on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis) versus last year. This is the best April sales month for Mazda since 2008. On a calendar year-to-date basis, Mazda's sales are up 21.5 percent (22.7 percent DSR), with 103,529 vehicles sold.

Key April sales notes:
■ Not since 1994 has Mazda reached 100,000 vehicle sales so soon in the sales year.
■ The all-new 2013 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV, named "2012 Crossover of the Year" from Autobytel and an IIHS "Top Safety Pick" is already a popular choice for customers. In its second full month of sales, 3,521 vehicles were sold in April. Mazda 6 sales are up 38.3 percent versus last year with 3,780 vehicles sold.
■ Mazda's SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY, the brand's engineering-focused philosophy toward improving all-around vehicle efficiency, is already demonstrating strong sales through its fitment in the 2012 Mazda3 (up to 40 MPG highway) and the all-new CX-5 (highest highway (35 MPG), and best combined (29 MPG), fuel economy of any SUV sold in the U.S.). Mazda's total SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY sales for April account for 25 percent of total sales for the month.

Rounding out April sales for the North American market, Mazda Motor de Mexico (MMdM) reported its April sales of 1,849 vehicles, down 15.0 percent versus April of last year.

This for me is even bigger news....

It is not official, BUT, the rumor is little old MAZDA has knocked off General Motors Holden last month (April) for SECOND Place!!!..

Never before in history has two Japanese brands been the top two sellers here.
Never before in 40+ years has Mazda been in #2.

I said this here 3 years ago that they (Mazda Australia) are not trying to knock off Toyota....it is a possibility...and they are not even trying.

Toyota is light years ahead in First.

RIWWP 05-01-2012 04:29 PM

Of course, this is just more "proof" to the naysayers that Mazda is failing badly, and in dire need of bailing out by someone else, and all the more reason to kill off products that we know and love..... :uhh:

:wallbash:

Great news Ash :) :icon_tup:

SayNoToPistons 05-01-2012 05:09 PM

That means more money for rotary R&D. Yes Please.

ASH8 05-01-2012 09:39 PM

RIWWP and SNTP...

Yes, I have been seeing all the internet comments from idiots who know JS.

They blame Mazda's "ugly" looking smiley cars, or this, or that, or the latest is the CX-5..

Or the new CX-5 is Noisy inside, road noise and bangy, according to Auto Express in the UK, they love VW...

Well in the US, another tester did a CX-5, new Honda CRV and new turbo Escape for a test/review and guess who won...and the Mazda was the quietest in the bunch, had by far the best MPG, fit and finish and interior that is not like a space ship.

THE MAIN REASON Mazda lost so much money is down to two things.
1. High YEN to US Dollar and that they export 80% of cars out of Japan.
2. Mazda invested 100's of $ millions on Skyactiv and a complete new gen change of models by 2015/16...ALL are now in the pipeline except all new Mazda 2 and an RX-?.

ShellDude 05-01-2012 10:03 PM

I think the Tsunami and subsequent power grid / supply chain issues threw them quite a curve ball too.

ASH8 05-01-2012 11:51 PM

Yes, definitely..

Mazda did not have a huge supply issue like Honda and Toyota, many parts are made locally.
Some ECU issues at the end.

But Mazda did stop and or slow down production for obvious compassionate reasons, plus workers did not particularly want to work after this disaster to their country.

Then came power grid shortages (which is still an issue in the east.)

And then the Thailand floods which affected Mazda-Ford joint venture for BT-50, Ranger, Mazda 2 and Fiesta....Thankfully Mazda Australia just got a huge initial shipment of ALL new BT-50's a few weeks before it's local launch.

Here, GM and Toyota are still having supply issues with their Utes out of Thailand, and 80% of Honda Australia cars come out of Thailand, No Civics, Accords, Euro's...Honda Dealers in OZ have had a terrible supply problem since Earthquake, Tsunami and Floods.

All Japanese car makers are reviewing their "just in time" parts inventories, looking to hold a few more months instead of weeks parts supply for such future events.

The only issue with larger inventories is a much slower turn around for line modifications/parts updates on the fly...TSB modifications.

It is OFFICIAL..

Preliminary sales figures for April show import-only brand is Number Two.

Mazda’s march to the top of the sales chart continued in April.

Last year, the Mazda3 small car became Australia’s top-selling vehicle, ending the Holden Commodore’s 15-year winning streak.

In March, Mazda as a brand toppled local manufacturer Ford for a spot on the podium behind Toyota and Holden.

Advertisement: Story continues below Now Mazda has done what was once considered unimaginable – the Japanese import-only brand has bumped Holden to be the second-biggest selling brand behind Toyota in April.

According to preliminary figures, Mazda eclipsed Holden by fewer than 100 sales in a month that is typically a difficult period for new-car sales given the number of holiday breaks.

Toyota sold approximately 16,000 new cars last month compared to Mazda’s tally of about 7700 and Holden’s of about 7600.

In all honesty, I can't wait to trade in our Infinti QX for a CX-5. After driving one (touring), I fell in love with the efficiency, practicality, and handling.Yes the Infiniti and CX-5 are totally in different ballgames; the Infiniti may be slightly quieter, has more torque feel (obvious), and somewhat more luxurious, but the CX-5 stacks up more pros for me not to regret the swap.

With that said, it is obvious why the CX-5 has such great sales figures. Unfortunately, I have to wait until August when I come back from California to trade in the Infiniti.

oh yeah I forgot to ask you about the CX-5 last week.

so it's good huh ... but jeeze should I wait for the Diesel version ... should I should I ... grrrr ....

ohhh, Great news ASH! Ahhh, more Rotary R&D funds. ! GET THAT THING OUT THE DOOR ALREADY !

Wait for the Diesel CX-5......definately.

Ash I read that news a little while ago about besting Holden and i thought that has got to be even better news then then the US/NA increase. It will get more press certainly leading to overall more "mindshare" and thats what they are getting more than anything right now. non-Mazda folks THINKING about Mazda

ASH8 05-02-2012 02:54 PM

Mazda in the US should take a good hard look how Mazda Australia has quietly gone about achieving what it has...

MNAO could only dream about a double digit market share in a market just as concentrated, even more so brand wise, we now have virtually all Chinese brands here, plus all European....Opel later this year.

I hold little respect for management at MNAO...under their watch they have continually trashed the brand, I can't see how MMC has allowed it to continue the way it has.

Blaming MMC for not giving them enough "marketing money" is just a cop out.
With a staff of 700 taking it down to 350!!!....MA does it with 125.!!..and way less $$$'s
No wonder cost cutting is necessary.

Positive news!..:)

If they weren't centered in southern California, they probably WOULD have done better. (in my opinion)

From my last job, going through 2 acquisitions of locations in socal, it's a very different work mentality there. Namely "enough is enough, no need to do extra."

ASH8 05-02-2012 03:07 PM

"enough is enough, no need to do extra." ...yeah I get it...just what I thought.

Agreed - the weather is just too damn nice there to waste time working!

:smiley309

And yeah, I'm jealous. :crying:

Yeah, one free day I decided to spontaneously go to Wantagh Mazda to test drive one. I will be going again to compare the FWD and AWD, then talk out a lease deal since they're getting better and better since their first release. I will be getting two year free maintenance (with free loaner car if needed) since I already have one Mazda (RX-8).

Lease a 2013 CX-5 GT, and return lease in a year for a 2014 SkyActiv-D? Yes please. Plus, the first year TSBs (or recalls) should be ironed out some too.

I'm really interested into what's driving the spike in Mazda6 sales this year

ASH8 05-03-2012 03:33 PM

Agree, and I thought the same....here (OZ) we had a similar spike for the Japanese made 6 a few months back...there is little to no advertising.

Truly odd indeed. They are decent cars and the V6 is smooth and powerful. I must check to see whether they have incentives or something, some kind of discounts maybe.

I also thought I saw US sales of 13000 plus for the 3 in March and now 8000. Maybe I'm dreaming.

Paul.

Have you driven one yet?

I've driven one with the saleman before, but I finally had a chance to take one out all by myself for a real test drive yesterday. I love it. I shouldn't, I mean it's a truck lol, it's not very powerful, it was an automatic... everything I hate, and yet it's just delightful to toss around. Light, nimble, great seating position, great visbility. I want it for it's fun-to-driveness more than it's utility. I actually had more fun driving the CX-5 than the new Mazda3.

It can feel weak if you let the automatic shift, since it aims for great mpgs. But it's quite a bit more fun when in manual mode. And the shifts are seamless.

I know the diesel is more powerful, but the gasoline is still fun. It has a nice sound to it too, refined (to me anyway), which is nice since you do have to wring it out to really make it go. It's definately worth a try anyway, before going with the diesel.

I'm thiiiiiiiis close now to getting one now. If I didn't have to trade in the 8 for it, I'd have one now. I definately want one, I just don't know if I'm ready to lose my 8 for it.

SayNoToPistons 06-23-2012 06:57 PM

Hi, Ash. Any updates on Mazda's sales and profit statistics? Currently entering a debate with a Ford fan boy buddy that insist that "Mazda is falling apart after big brother ditched them".

77mjd 06-23-2012 08:38 PM

Mazda needs to roll out the diesel lineup ASAP.
