Mazda 3 MPS (MS3) Rolls 10 Times in Bathurst 12 Hour.
Hour Ten of the 2008 WPS Bathurst 12 Hour has been concluded in terrifying style when the Mazda 3 MPS driven by Sydney's Len Cave flipped an amazing ten times through The Chase, with Cave amazingly escaping any serious injury.
Cave was further down in the pack when he was approaching the chase nine hours and 42 minutes in and dropped a wheel, sliding sideways into the sand trap at approximately 250 kilometres per hour. Digging into the sand trap, the blue Thrifty #27 Mazda then rolled approximately ten times with a number being clean in the air – with the impact so severe the engine, front suspension and gear box were torn clear during the crash, with the car amazingly coming to rest on its roof on the exit of The Chase. Amazingly, Cave was able to remove himself from the car, and is currently being assisted by medical personnel on site of the crash and will soon be escorted to the medical centre with full precautions for a thorough check-over, however he appears to have escaped serious injury. The incident at the close of the tenth hour has required the seventh safety car of the Race and the first since the seventh hour. The safety car once again compresses the field, and will reduce the lead that Grant Denyer and his Mitsubishi EVO IX has maintained over second-place since taking over at the conclusion of the last hour from Klark Quinn. Denyer was two minutes and 30 seconds over second-placed Damien White at the time of the safety car, and on the restart in the next hour will lead White, Craig Baird, Layton Cranbrook and Daniel Schulz into what is left of the final two hours of this challenging 12 hour test. At the close of hour ten the top outright contenders are: Grant Denyer - #29 Mitsubishi EVO IX RS Damien White - #87 – Mitsubishi Evo IX Craig Baird - #20 – BMW 335i Layton Cranbrook - #11 – BMW 335i Daniel Schulz - #26 – Subaru WRX STi At the close of hour ten the class leaders are: Class A – Grant Denyer - #29 Mitsubishi EVO IX RS Class B - Craig Baird - #20 – BMW 335i Class C – Luke Searle (#3) – BMW 130 Class D – Brian Walden (#24) – Holden Commodore VZ SS Class E – Peter Conroy (#14) – Honda Integra Type S Class F – Greg Sticker (#40) – Hyundai Sonata Class G – n/a Class H – Wayne Vinckx – Alfa Romeo 147 JTD |
The crash made national News here...wow what a roll!!.
Someone may find vision on Youtube BTW An Evo 9 won the race. |
wonder how that would feel rolling 10 times .....
|
Whoa, the motor flew out!
<3 rollcage. |
amazing pictures - bring on the vid link
|
Isn't that a record or something? I know Top Gear had the record a while back, then Casino Royale, but I think this beats both of them...
I too want a video of this. |
ouch! Is that the engine flying out of there and on fire?!?
|
Bathurst... What a hell of a track. I remember running laps on this thing in some video game. It was one of my favorite tracks. I'd like to see it in person if it wasn't so far away.
|
Wow that looks downright scary
Hope that the driver is fine after the a crash like that |

Most International drivers rate it #2 in the world with Nueburgring # 1. |
Dibs on the Motor lmfao...
Ok seriously now.. thats wow.. and to pretty much walk away from that is just WOW.. he must of hugged his crew and most likely (cause I would) call up the guy who made the rollcage and said he's in his will now. |

More Info..
Len (about 50yo) was on his last lap in second place and coming into the pits (just 400 metres from this crash) when his rear tyre went onto the sand trap. There was no loss of wheel. Obviously at 200KMH (120MPH) the car dug in and rolled 10 times. The Mazda landed on its feet and Len slowly opened the door and got out. He could not see anything for 3 hours and busted 4 ribs. Check out this link, he looks like he went 10 rounds in the ring. Bloody amazing how he survived and walked away. http://au.todaytonight.yahoo.com/art...vor-lucky-roll https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1202805259 |
O M F G ! ! !
did his face get burned? |
I understand both crashes we have recently seen have had roll cages, but it good to see both people walk away from bad accidents (this guy, and the guy that had his breaks fail)...its nice to know that we have fun, but yet very safe cars!
|
Last lap of the race AND last race of his 30 yr accident free racing carreer ? Don't think there will be a comeback .......
|
I guess he wrecked on the little kink after the long downhill straight. I guess you would pretty much be at maximum speed or close to it there.
|
Yep, that is the spot it's called "Con-rod Straight", the kink or dog leg was put there 20 years or so ago to slow cars down, before, Imaging almost a 1.8 kilo straight going flat out and then into a sharp 90 degree left hander onto the start/finish line. So many rolled their cars at that corner or went straight on!, so the dog leg stopped most of the rolls...accidents..
I think it is just bruising on his face, man on the TV his eyes are just BLACK. |
Wow! glad he's alright.
|
holy hell the motor!!!
this guy is lucky :yesnod: |
