Dempsey leaves Mazda...

The delay in Mazda's P2 customer engine program follows news of Dempsey Racing going their separate ways with the Japanese manufacturer for 2013. Dempsey was earmarked as the first customer of the 2.2-liter diesel turbo powerplant.

That's unfortunate. Mazda themselves is to blame. Even the engine and the Grand Am GX Mazda6 platform arrived at Speedsource late, which gave them quite a hard time to complete the Mazda6 before Roar.

yeah, IMO you have a very successful outfit who has only used Rotaries going to a totally different animal (banger diesel) and expect (Mazda maybe) to be ready and competitive.

Frankly, IMO a local manager @ either MNAO or Speedsource perhaps underestimated the time/expertise to have this ready???..

Mazda Japan only released the SA Diesel, what about a year ago.
Mazda Japan has also never raced a Diesel before.

I have faith in Speedsource as they have done a tremendous job prepping the 6 in such a short time. They have stated many times that it was Mazda who was late to delivery the diesel platform/s to them for R&D.

Yep, so do I..

And it is easy to blame another for problems..as I said Mazda Japan only had the SA-D available for sale in CX-5 under a year ago, and is not even sold yet in USA...cars are not even made yet.

When a product is embargoed there is not much one can do....what someone wants and gets is another issue.

Frankly I would like to see the SA-D sorted properly before it is race track launched...whatever issues there are we would hate to see a failure in maiden race.

I believe the timetable was perhaps a little too ambitious.

Agreed on the timetable being ambitious.

I wonder if Dempsey will be coming back to Mazda. The company and Patrick Dempsey have been working together for quite some years, even before he entered Grand AM with the RX-8's. Hell, Mazda even let him be the spokes person and let him drive the#55 787B.

I do understand that at the end when a race team of Dempsey Racing's caliber, it is mostly business. Unfortunately it seems like Dempsey Racing had no choice but to ditch Mazda after they were seemingly let down.
