K&N Bought out AEM

So today I was talking to a few of my suppliers/Distributors and found out the K&N bought out AEM....

They did this a few weeks ago, and apparently until K&N straightens out what they are going to do with AEM production of new intakes has stopped.

So far they will only be shipping what is in stock and the Polished AEM intake for the RX-8 is one of the ones sold out.

4-6 Weeks at least and all orders are put on a BO status....

Gahd this sucks!

PirateARRRX8 04-15-2009 10:52 AM

What?? That's nuts... I guess AEM was hurting in this economy.

mscamp02 04-15-2009 10:53 AM

I always thought AEM was one of the biggest and would be affected by the economy so much

Race Roots 04-15-2009 10:55 AM

K&N is the biggest...always have always will be.

mscamp02 04-15-2009 11:00 AM

I know K&N is the absolute biggest, I was just thinking that AEM was also really big

Rotr8 04-15-2009 11:11 AM

Yahhh so now everyones future aem cai will sputter filter oil all over the MAF just like the K&Ns do,,, lol...

2tone 04-15-2009 11:31 AM

crazy!!

hey fluid, my gf has a mazda 3 (i've pm'd you about getting stuff for her in the future but i'm broke right now so i haven't ordered her anything...). but anyway, do you (or anyone else) know if the aem intake for the mazda 3 is the "same" as the mazdaspeed 3 intake (ie like it is for the rx8)? if so, i want to get that intake for her mazda 3. if it's totally different, i might just save up for the mazda intake. anyway, IF it's the same/similar design, can you check on if your supplier has any stock left on an aem intake for an '04 mazda 3 sedan?? :)

kersh4w 04-15-2009 11:53 AM

this sucks.

the aem cai is vastly superior to k&n.

Atilla 04-15-2009 11:59 AM

Didn't see that one coming....:icon_no2:

CTrx8 04-15-2009 12:04 PM

we'll have to see how it plays out. i doubt they would buy AEM just to get them off the market. we may not see a lot of the quality products in the future that AEM put out if they don't keep their R&D guys but i'm hopeful that once they sit down and review the portfolios, they'll start up production again on the AEM line.

alnielsen 04-15-2009 12:14 PM

Companies don't sell out just because they are in trouble. Sometimes the sell out to cash in, because they are strong and others want a piece of that action.

Race Roots 04-15-2009 12:24 PM

K&N now controls 80% of the intake market if not more.

It is a very smart business move, hope their product line stays intact.

DCSPORTS was an obvious tell tale sign something was up, way back when they used to be big, then they fell off and went out of business but then another company brought them back.

nycgps 04-15-2009 01:02 PM

Oh well

Guess MS CAI will be out of production REAL SOON ! :)

TheWulf 04-15-2009 01:06 PM

This really sucks... AEM had some great products, I hope this doesn't go downhill

Race Roots 04-15-2009 01:10 PM

Greddy is getting there too...on a very serious note the Greddy Strut Bars have become special order now.

4-6 weeks if no US distributors stock them...thankfully mine have listened.

This seems to be a losing battle everyday for this industry.

Huey52 04-15-2009 01:39 PM

Why? AEM was the MS CAI OEM, so now K&N is. They simply have (control) more products in the markeplace. Smart move indeed.

Lots of companies do it too. For example Meguair's car car products recently sold out to 3M. It wasn't because they were hurting either (they're rich). One of my friends grew up in Tennessee and knew the meguair's family personally so thats why I know this lol

I think they prefer to sell their version(short ram) than AEM's version.

so if they discountine it. Where will Mazda buy their CAI From ?

dozer 04-15-2009 01:59 PM

yeah i got mine for 30$

Charles R. Hill 04-15-2009 03:14 PM

From K+N, Themselves......

I got this in my mail 5 weeks ago........

March 2nd, 2009
To all AEM Customers:

In the current economic and technical environment, it makes sense for businesses to look for opportunities to form strategic partnerships to enhance the strength of the companies. In this spirit, AEM and K&N have formed a strategic partnership and alliance to take advantage of each company’s core competencies. As a result, AEM air intakes, filters, and related air induction products will now be managed and operated in a strategic partnership with K&N. AEM will provide technical and engineering services while K&N will manage the sales, marketing, and manufacturing of these product lines. AEM performance electronics and billet parts will continue to be engineered, manufactured, and sold exclusively by AEM.

How this affects you:

At this time you should continue to order products and make contact with AEM in the usual manner. In some cases some orders may be split between induction and electronic segments. Over the next few months some procedures for AEM induction products will change including ordering, billing, and sales support. You will be contacted with more information as these changes occur.

We appreciate your support and look forward to the opportunities that this partnership brings. If you have any questions please contact Kirk Miller or Greg Neuwirth.

Thank you for your ongoing business.

What is happening is that AEM is handing over the sales, marketing, and manufacturing of their air intake division while still designing and developing the various applications. AEM will also retain sole control over their electronics division. Since K+N has a more massive manufacturing, sales, and marketing approach this partnership should benefit both AEM and K+N. Not exactly a "buy out" but simply AEM improving their operations and efficiencies and refocusing on other areas.
