Jalopnik on the 2017 BRZ

Subaru BRZ Gets Five More Horsepower; The Game Will Never Be The Same; Muscle Car Fans Have Lost All Reason To Live

Hilarious article.

In seriousness though, I think this is a fantastic update for the BRZ!

- Actual engine mods (top end, intake and exhaust manifolds) instead of cheap bolt-ons
- Structural improvements
- New springs, dampers, RSB
- New option package with Brembos and even better dampers

As someone who thinks cars in general are fast enough, and that what the market really lacks are cars that respond and handle well, I kind of love this. Not gonna lie.

Those are nice incremental improvements, but probably still not enough to make me want to own one. I test drove the BRZ three times before I bought my 8 and kept thinking I should like it, but I just didn't. I could make it drift at 20mph, but couldn't stop thinking about the $7,000 it was going to cost me to make it ride on rails like an 8 does from the factory, so I bought the 8 instead.

I think my decision has been supported since I have never once been beaten by one at the track. And, I don't think these small improvements are going to change that.

For me it was an FR-S, but that was more or less my experience. Other than the desire to mod it, my overall feeling was the same.

I'm just happy that someone is still pushing this kind of formula -- i.e. let the engine just be good enough, and focus on the chassis.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure the whole point of the 86 twins was NOT to be too quick, at least in remotely stock form.

June 12th there is another announcement coming regarding the BRZ. From the pic on Subaru's website, my guess is a fake STI with a special color and body kit.

Steve Dallas you hit the nail on the head "but couldn't stop thinking about the $7,000 it was going to cost me to make it ride on rails like an 8 does from the factory". Nuff said. The RX-8's handling is magical for the price.

Great remarks by the folks who posted above, it is why we appreciate cars like the RX-8. But Jalopnik sarcastic article is not.

From the article: "There will be a Track Mode, a Performance Package, and five more horsepower! Hey Hellcat—you’re on notice."

I have driven a hellcat manual trans with 707 HP. In my opinion it is an acceleration sled, but that is about it. After few runs with traction control going nuts, it becomes boring. The RX-8 is always much more fun.

these BRZ/ FRS are played out. Subaru's are the new Hondas. its so boy racer..... Super street just did an article on the new Jackson racing super charger kit for it, that looks like it would be everything the BRZ needs but i'm still not that impressed with it over all.

i would still rather have a stock S2000, miata, or RX-8. again there is no refinement or exclusivity to having an FRS. let's not forget all the hype we were given about the new Toyota 86 back in 2010..?then got that...... snore.

Slow and yellow is a bad combination.

Sadly, the Japanese don't want to make affordable "grown up" sports cars.

Nissan Z?

The Genesis Coupe ain't bad either except for the interior. But my buddy has a modded V6 R version and it's ain't no slouch. My Turbo RX-8 beats it but he only has bolt ons.

There was a time I was considering the Genesis Coupe but I pretty much consider this a muscle car like the Mustang. Way too big and heavy for my liking. And the current version with the ugly hood and plastic strip on the front bumper is a complete turn off. And now they are gonna be replacing it with something way more expensive anyway.

Yeah the looks leave a lot to be desired but I guess that is subjective. But yeah, I agree on weight, the listed weight for the four cylinder is 200lbs more than my RX-8 weighs with the turbo kit and all the other stuff I have added.
