Interesting article on Direct Injection
|
Isn't the MS6 supposed to have GDI? I haven't been here in a long time, so I don't know.
Anyway, I remember reading an SAE tech paper my sophmore year about John Deere direct injection single-rotor engines. It was an interesting paper, not to mention it was on microfilm. Anyway, the performance characteristics showed a significant improvement over a conventional port injection system, and moreso a carbureted system. However, I think there was an issue with the engines thermal characteristics, since I believe the engine was under ultra-lean combustion. From the article, I throught Europe's gasoline had a reasonable amount of sulphur for lean-burn to actually work. Basically, the main idea is to inject fuel as late in the compression stroke as possible. I think Mitsubishi had their injectors angled somewhere from 20-30 degrees from the vertical of the spark plug. |
