If you were to sell your baby...

what would you guys suggest for me to take a look at? I have a 1994 RX-7 with all bolt ons and everything but lately it's just been giving me nothing but problems. If I sold it, what should I look into? What I'm looking for is something exotic/rare/sports car around the same price.

She's beautiful. I don't think I could do it.

tiggerlee 01-12-2007 06:58 PM

If you decide to sell,I'm in the market for an FD. If I may ask, just what "problems" have you had with it? You can PM me if you'd like.

Ike 01-12-2007 07:02 PM

Supra, MR2 Turbo Hardtop, Evo, STI, NSX, M3, maybe a used Elise... Though a decent Supra, Elise, or NSX would probably be impossible to find for what you'd get for the RX-7. Even the Evo and STI would be tough to find for less than 22k. I'm guessing your RX-8 is worth 13-17k depending on mileage...

Wing5 01-12-2007 07:10 PM

That car is gorgeous, keep it if at all possible. Maybe just get a beater for reliability/mileage.

HardHitter 01-12-2007 07:49 PM

Most supras are running around $30k+

I highly doubt mine or many other FD's would sell for 30k+ no matter how much you've put into it.

I'd be looking for something that still has the power/kick but also a nice looking car. Doesn't HAVE to be exotic. For example, I would consider an 2003 Cobra (again those are 30k+) or a nice Saleen/Roush Mustang. Yes I know going from an FD to a Mustang is a BIG different but still, in my eyes I like those Mustangs and they do have some power. WS6 Transam's are pretty nice too and also make good power.

I do love the sound of the V8, but then again, these are the types of cars you see around everywhere, but still I find them looking good.

Possibly a BMW (5 series?) , Audi (S4?) , or Mercedes (CLK55?) anything is open to me.

With my Dad just picking up a clean 1996 Porsche 911, I'd love to find a Porsche, but again, those are in the 30k+ range. Only thing in the range would be a Boxster and I wouldn't really consider that a Porsche.

I don't have the 8 anymore.

Tiggerlee, the problems have just been ongoing. First I smelt a fuel leak, so I had to replace my fuel pulsation dampner which took me 4 days. Then when I finally got it fixed, I took it for a test drive and a coolant hose busts. Another day getting the coolant hose and then replacing it. Then after that is fixed, my 2ndary wouldn't boost all the way and it's because one of my solenoids broke so I had to go buy more solenoids and I replaced them and all the vaccum hoses. I fixed that but now there is a whine or whistling coming from the engine bay. We found that a ground wire got stuck between the UIM and LIM so it was air sucking it. Went away! Then just couple days ago, it started again. It could be a simple fix being it a missing bolt or something like that, but I'm just getting tired of it.

I'm picking up an 98-99 Grand Prix GTP for my daily driver and will have the FD or whatever other car as the weekend car.

An '04 6-speed RX-8 with 50,000 miles in decent condition can fetch at least 16k if they are patient (privately sold). Forget about trade-in though. But anyone who has kept their 8 for that long is probably in it for the long haul anyway.

Frynge 01-12-2007 11:50 PM

civic. all the way. final answer. no whammy no whammy... @.@;

JeRKy 8 Owner 01-12-2007 11:50 PM

HardHitter: It may be ugly as hell, but did you consider a used 04/05 GTO? Any of them with 15,000 miles and up go for around 20k.

Phantom Menace 01-13-2007 01:03 AM

How much are you selling the FD for? Ike pretty much gave a good list of cars. Although I wouldn't call any of them "exotic," sans the NSX. The Supra Turbo is by far, the rarest one to get and will still run you near $20k. I'd suggest, on top of Ike's list, a '94 300ZXTT. I had a '91 and loved it.

If none of these suit your palate, get a bike. You can get a Ducati or MV Agusta, used, for about $12k and will out run, brake, and handle any of these cars.

Personally, I wouldn't sell my 8 for anything in it's "class." For the price I got it for (new) I probably could've gotten:
a) Civic Si Coupe
b) Base Model Nissan Altima
c) Base Model Toyota Camry
d) 2 Yaris' or Yari
e) Base Model Accord
f) You get the picture...

2 cents.

That was a typo, I meant to say his RX-7 was worth 13-17k.

Raptor2k 01-13-2007 01:52 AM

Really sweet looking 7.

Renesis_8 01-13-2007 02:43 AM

Keep it at all cost!! I say dont drive it for now. Perhaps drop some money and time into it on a long weekend, find and replace failing parts in the engine compartment. You have a very beautiful RX-7.

Sadly, you were right on the money for the trade in value of an '04 RX-8.

PhantomRX8 01-13-2007 07:34 PM

That's a great-looking -7. My red '95 -7 recently gave me nothing but problems, and after the last engine failure, I sold it for $5k (needed engine rebuild) and bought an -8.

I love the -8, but if I weren't getting married and thus losing all my dispensable cash, I'd possibly have gotten the BMW Z4 M coupe. It retails at $50k but really is sweet.

rotary crazy 01-13-2007 08:31 PM

any car older than 6 years is going to give a fair share of problems, even more if is a sports car.

I have a 94 FD and last year I gave her a super tuned up, change all the hoses, vaccum lines, pulsation damper, etc. The car runs great.

Even the rare hardtop convertible version of the VR4 couldn't get half of that.

Plus they're ill handling overweight pigs. Hell, if you're going to lust after one at least make it one of the earlier models before the discontinued all the neat features.

He speaks the truth, my last car was exactly that: 1st gen vr4. Loved the active aero, pop up head lights, etc. etc. ^.^

joyridevr6 01-14-2007 07:29 AM

I say fix it. You'll hate yourself down the road if you sell it.

Sephiroth 01-14-2007 12:12 PM

The Boxster is a very good car. Very nice handling and balance. The S version with aftermarket supercharger would be an ideal setup if you like the open top experience.

llzjayarzll 01-15-2007 12:29 AM

keep the car and buy the vr4. it probably wouldnt solve anything except adding to the hunger!

snizzle 01-15-2007 06:32 PM

I certainly couldn't get rid of it. Maybe take it to a rotary mechanic for a full tuneup if you're tired of the work?
