realistically (no, I really AM serious), and seeing as I don't have an 8 yet, if I were to win the lottery tomorrow, I'd get an 8 (copper red shinka and I'd make them make me one with navi) for my daily driver, and then an ariel atom to drive for fun. And I'd end up spending under 100 grand for 2 awesome cars.

I've actually been getting more and more interested in modern diesel technology. Unfortunately we don't get any diesel cars here in the U.S. that I would like to own. I'm going to keep watching that though. For now I'll keep driving a paid off 2000 civic around until it falls apart. The rotary is for the fun of it.

well like what diesel cars, the Jag S-type? It probably doesn't help that diesel is more expensive than gas in the US

If you can get 45+ mpg city, a few extra cents a gallon really makes up for that pretty fast. Let say a good diesel could get 40 mpg city vs my Civic at 32 mpg city. Understand that my Civic is alrady a very efficient car when it comes to mileage compared to most other cars. There are a few that do better but most do worse. Let's also say they both cars in the comparison hold 12 gallons. That's 384 miles per tank in the Civic vs 480 miles per tank in a diesel. There are many diesles that get much better than that but a few that do less. Let's say that regular gas costs $2.50 per gallon. It is here right now. Right now diesel is $2.60 per gallon here average but I've seen it cheaper than regular gas in places lately. That's $30 vs $31.20 per tank. That extra 96 miles would be 3 more gallons in the Civic which is $7.50 more in gasoline to go that far. That's a $5 advantage to the diesel. Diesel would have to be $3.12 a gallon vs the gas at $2.50 to go the same distance for the same price. I have yet to see a 72 cent difference in their price but I have seen numbers that show mileage numbers much better than my example.
I know this is a very crude example that can be affected by many things but the point is that the average mileage of most modern diesels more than makes up for any price differences in fuel costs. VW has diesels and while I might go drive one, I have no desire of owning a VW. I don't want a jag. Didn't even know they had a diesel here. Audi doesn't have one here yet as far as I know and I don't really get excited about them anyways. I can't afford a Mercedes diesel and the weight of those cars doesn't really make them any better than my little Civic. Unfortunately the cars I do like don't come with them. I like the concept and am interested in it but it is only a curiosity until I actually drive one. I'm used to higher revving lower torque engines as opposed to lower revving higher torque engines so I have yet to see how well I'll take to it. For a performance car I'll stick to what I know and love but for a daily driver I'm interested. |
If I could afford another car I'd get an 8 because I don't have one. And it's not so much that I can't afford one. I just have commitment issues.
If I did have an 8 I wouldn't base whether I got another car on if I could afford it -- I'd base it off if I needed it AND could afford it. My need would dictate what kind of car it was. Sorry to crap on the thread. I just don't know what kind of answer you really wanna hear. I want tons of car. Doesn't mean I'd get any or all of them, even if I had the money. I've always liked the Infiniti FX series. Dunno how practical it is, but it just looks so cool. |
