I know alot of us are Rolex series fans...

But what do you guys feel about Koni Challenge? i have been trying for years to get into it, but for some reason , the series does not interest me . So how do you racing fans feel about the series?

RWatters 02-04-2008 01:16 PM

I like the series a lot because the vehicles are modified, yet still look very production-based. I like the series more than the Speed World Challenge that's for sure.

Koni and the Rolex Grand Am series are my two favorites on TV outside of F1.

I have a problem with the DP cars. They tell me they are different (an I know, in my mind that they are), but they look the same. They have a spec chassis that they have to work with and that is going to dictate what the optimum body shape will be. It would be nice if there was a little more variation in the bodies besides color. Other than that, I like the GT race & Koni series

The series has been around for a while and has been televised (just not at convenient times), I think it picked up Koni sponsorship last year.

Off Topic: Everyone is leaving IndyCar & CART because it is closer to a merger than ever. There are only so many spots for teams and drivers if it does happen.

They usualy show it the week after the main race is aired on TV, and more often than not around 12-2pm on a Sunday with very very little advertising about it.

And on the off topic, that and most know that the money is in Nascar at the moment. That and well Nascar is looking for these people also. They can only survive so long off Earnhart and the rest, new blood whom already have a following just means more people watching their races.

Plus I love the Koni Challenge just more racing that isnt NASCAR!!!!!! I dont hate it I just hate how Speed seems to of converted into this Redneck Nascar TV. Like seriously a mini-marathon of Monster Jam UGH lol..

i think that is probably why its hard for me to get into. I wish they have the ST on a next following day. then i probably watch it more often.

Clavius 02-04-2008 07:47 PM

I thought the Koni was if you will the production styled cars only and then the actual Rolex had the DP's in it? Or am I confused at the moment? Although I do wish they just seperate the Classes since the DP field seems to be growing WAY to big, that and they focus on them to much at times taking away from the other class which to me is more interesting since well um.. I actually drive one of the cars (in appearance only I know lol).

Well I'll be heading to LimeRock this year to watch 'em either way WOOT!

usually they have DP on one day of the weekend and gt on the other. (btw this is for rolex series).

Renesis_8 02-04-2008 08:11 PM

Lets just say GrandAm will never get 1/100th as big as NASCAR. There is actually very little demand from racing fans in north america. Thats why Speed airs only NASCAR. I really do hate speed for airing only NASCAR, but the fault is not on them.

The Daytona 24 was pretty good. I enjoyed it watching it on Speed, even tho they only follow DP.

The DP & GT classes (Rolex Series) usually run at the same time. It's the Koni Series (GS & ST classes) that run at a different time. Koni Series cars race are production cars that are only allowed limited modifications. For Rolex GT cars the rules are much more liberal. Did you know that the GT RX8 has no production parts in that car (as far as I know). It uses a 3 rotor engine, tube frame, dry carbon fiber body, a transaxle instead of a transmission & differential, ......

Renesis_8 02-04-2008 09:18 PM

Then we have race car parts on on our car. :)

j_tso 02-04-2008 10:23 PM

I've tried to watching Koni, not as much coverage of the RX-8 like there is in Rolex.

I believe the other RX-8 entrants (one made 10th) are full bodied cars.

There is one. It is eather the Golden Brothers car or Team Spencer. I don't remember which. It was built before the rules allowed a tube frame car. I have only seen it race in the Daytona 24 Hr and unfortunately it has never done very well.

Renesis_8 02-05-2008 04:08 AM

The Goldin Car was bought from the dealership and hacked up. Theres a roll cage in there but not built by Riley and Mazdaspeed. And I guess most of the body panels are metal, except maybe the front bumper and widen fenders.

I like GT, F1, German touring car racing,ALMS, the koni series is cool, I like the SCCA Touring class, alot of those guys have some serious grudges on the track against each other, and it showed last year at Sebring. Mazdaspeed team vs Real Time Acuras, wow they were rubbing, scrubbing and bumping each other like crazy.:yesnod:

I wish speed would show the JGTC racing here in the states... would be nice to see some Supras,350Z, Skylines and NSX's racing.

yes i know the speed source 8 is a 3 rotor car, along with the other rx8 that are made by speedsource. i cried the day last year when the dp car jumped in front of ham on the last race (:(). but i could of sworn that the rolex series dp and gt play on different days. well at least on speedvision it was. they would play DP on saturdadys and GT on sundays. but i guess it changed /shrug. and i guess every time i watched Koni challenge, they always had both classes running at the same time. but maybe i just caught it on the day when they ran both classes instead of one. just like in rolex they would have both classes running some times.

btw for the alms, i hope Penske wins this year :)
