I am thinking of buying a Mustang
 

One of my wife and I's favorite past times/hobby is to get something to eat, put the kid in the back and go for cruise on the weekends. We have been enjoying it so much that we really want to get something that is a convertible.

I went to looked at the 2014 model V6 and it is a very nice looking affordable convertible. What else is out there that you would recommend and the pros and cons of each? I would get the MX-5 but I can't take the toddler. We need one with back seats at the Mustang's price point.

That car fits you much better than the 8.

Before buying, you can rent one from most national car rental agencies. Get one for a weekend, take the falimy out, and see what you think. :)

Yep i would totally do that renting is a good idea... If you are looking for something just to cruse in with the top down on the weekend. The mustang would probably be just fine for that... However..... The downside is if you are looking to do some fun driving you will miss the handling of the RX8. The mustang handles like a tug boat... I have driven some hooked up mustangs.. A good friend of mine has the newer style mustang 2009 with a TUN of mods to the suspension but my rx8 is feels better. Still much more predictable.. It feels way more balanced . Even my 06 WRX is better in handing than the mustang... Its kinda funny though. The same guy owns another 2004 Mustang that has upgraded wheels and tires... and not as many mods and it feels much more planted than the newer one. i dont know why.. Im not sure if they are the same chassis or whatever but the older one feels better to me for some reason... Also, Granted the stock RX8 handling is hard to beat to start with... My Subaru handling was crap in the stock format I have done a ton of work to that thing and its WAY better now but the rx8 is still a step up.. As for the sound of the mustang that is a work of art and the rx8 or the wrx even with the boxer rumble (before my equal length headers) is no match for a nice exhaust system on the mustang that is tuned etc.. SOOOOOOO nice... but the 6 cyl wont give you that. :(

I rented a 2010 (i think) the first year the v6 was 300 hp and it was disappointing. The 8 felt like it pulled better, and the handling was lacking, but from what I think he is wanting, that's not going to matter.

It got great gas milage. I believe i got 30 on the freeway, and at 65 to 70mph, something like 1500 rpms :lol2: It has a comfortable ride and when the top is up it is very quiet for a convertible.

I would love a GT but they are way to expensive and my RX-8 has made me want something more fuel efficient.

I will have the car title for the rx8 next month...so my next future car (not really a "future" car, if you know what i mean) lol

I've been thinking about getting a Mustang, too. I was considering the 2004 Mustang when it first hit the streets, but decided against it when I found out that my insurance rates would go up considerably. Go figure, I have a perfect driving record.

So now I again find myself thinking about a new Mustang, V-8 style. I haven't driven one yet, but I'm put off by the solid rear axle. I can't believe Ford hasn't fixed that problem after all these years. On the other hand, I find the 420 HP 5.0L V-8 appealing, not to mention the almost retro Mustang style.

I love my 8, but lately I'm finding it just way too noisy and the seats a bit uncomfortable. But then, I'm getting old...

The mustang has a nice ride and looks really good. I believe the straight axle is preferred for drag racing, so i guess it's who they are marketing to.

The love axel is not an issue for me. I used to own a 66 Mustang and it has always been in the blood. My wife has made me feel pretty nostalgic about since it was the car I had when we were dating. Also if you wife green lights you to buy a new car, that is always a good thing! She is never been excited about cars so this is the fiirst time she has been into a car purchase.

Too be honest I will miss the performance of my Eight but I cannot remember the last time I took her to the track or autocross and my daughter is kind stuck in the back with nothing to do. We figured it would be more fun for all of us to cruise around with a top down enjoying all the nice Charleston weather.

So the only must haves are it has to be silver (wife says so), cloth seats, (wife says so), convertible (we says so), good gas mileage (we say so), and be a 6-speed (I say so).

I would imagine that a very, very small percentage of Mustang owners drag race their car. I believe Ford has retained the solid axle because it saves money. Don't get me wrong; a well setup solid axle can ride reasonably well. But in today's world, virtually all cars have 4-wheel independent suspension, and for a very good reason - handling. Solid axles are for trucks.

I got one last weekend. It is a 2010 GT Convertible with black leather interior.

If you're going to buy a new Mustang, a drop-top GT is the way to go. I like the color, too. Reminds me of "Eleanor" from Gone in 60 Seconds.

Yes I traded the Eight in on it and the reason I got this one was it is a manual. I would not have it any other way.

Yes we are! It is nice to drop the top and cruise around town. I am glad I got the V8 it sounds amazing.

Any plans for it? Are you going to kit it up, or put some stripes on it?

Maybe some black stripes and a shaker scoop (functional).

Is $800 really worth the cut hole in the hood and a tubing to the airbox?

The new Jaguar convertible is nice.

The FRS convertible has less room than the Mustang.
