How much was the RX7?

I was just wondering how much it was to buy an RX-7 brand new back in the day. Especially the FD.

dshiznit1489 01-03-2008 10:42 AM

$google

dothackRAVE 01-03-2008 10:43 AM

I already did that. All they have is used prices, which I'm not interested in, and no one seems to archive prices of cars that are no longer in production.

If you don't know the answer, please just STFU.

ZoomZoomH 01-03-2008 10:43 AM

IIRC it was around $39,000 USD, and this was 1994 US dollars!!!

FC's however, started at a MUCH reasonable $22,000 in mid-80's US dollars.

When the RX7 first came out in the 1979 it was $9,999. Price is what killed FD sales.

Wow, that's the way to get answers. Maybe I shouldn't tell you how much the window stickers were on my '87 TurboII, or '93 Base model since it would take me finding them again just to answer this question.

Red Devil's got my back! woo shaaaaa!

The price of the rx7 was decent until the US dollar bottomed out in the early 1990's. At that point the RX-7 ended up costing an arm and a leg due to the conversion rates.

The FD was supposed to be around $35,000 new depending on trim level etc. I bought my '93 used in 97 with 35K miles on it for $17,600. I sold it 2 years later for...$17,600 :)

BaronVonBigmeat 01-03-2008 01:45 PM

The FD was roughly on par with the Corvette in terms of price, as was the Supra, the 3000GT, and the 300Z.

I bought a brand-new "Limited Edition" RX-7 in 1980. Cash price with all the options was $10,300. Those were the days. That's less than the down payment I made on my 2007 RX-8!

That was one sweet car and I miss it terribly.

These numbers are a little inflated for both the FD and FC. Speaking from personal experience, I bought both cars new back in their day, and either could be had for much less.

The FD's MSRP in '93 wasn't bad, for my R1 model, it was $33,603. Prices did go up in '94 & '95 due to the exchange rate. MSRP on the '95 RX-7 was about $37.5k. Stack on some options and the '95 would approach $40k.

But recall these cars were selling very poorly. I got a good discount off of my '93 R1 model and paid something around $30-31k (can't recall the exact figure). But the car was still hot in the press at the time I bought mine back in '93. I'm sure left over '94s or '95s had even bigger discounts.

I bought my '86 Sport Package FC RX-7 brand new for around $15K. The GXL trim was more pricey, and the Turbo II model was low to mid $20K depending on the model year. At introduction, a base FC in '86 MSRPed in the low teens.

thank you for the hard numbers

RX-8 is definitely more of a successor to the FC than the FD in today's dollar; a relatively affordable sporty rotary coupe, instead of the expensive all-world pure sports car that was the FD.
