How long do you keep your cars for?

Sorry in advance if this is in the wrong forum.

But out of interest, how long do you guys and girls usually keep the same car for?

Honda Accord - 1.5 years (after my dad had driven it for about 4 or 5)
Geo Storm - 3.5 years (after my sister had it for 5)
Chevy S10 - 6 years and three months (my first car to buy and completely pay for)
Mazda RX8 - 5 months and counting

rx8wannahave 02-01-2005 02:30 PM

Nissan NX2000 (3 years)
Ford Probe GT (4 years)
RX-8 (at least 7 years and kind of looking like a forever car to me with each drive)

Shamblerock 02-01-2005 02:35 PM

5 years or more, usually. The 8 I will keep until I am not physically able to drive it.

GRT8 02-01-2005 02:40 PM

Usually 2-3 years but my RX8 will become a family heirloom willed to my grandchildren.

I have owned many Mazdas and other cars and trucks. I will keep it aslong as it still gives me that thrill of ownership I'm looking for. The "Fun Factor" of driving can get knocked down if a car ends up of poor quality and service. I have been happy with Mazda and have delt with many dealers and know that the most important thing is "Be Informed"! When you go in to buy or for service, do your home work. Know what this is going to cost the dealer, he is in it to make profit. Weather its a new car or should he cover syncros that were pushed beyond thier limits and the factory rep says no too. He has to be judge in some cases and in other cases you have all your documents and you get what you deserve...you hope.

When I buy a car I intend to keep it for the long-term -- as long as it deserves to be kept. I bought both Miatas planning to grow old with them; I've had the '91 since it was new (coming up on fourteen years now!) and it's still my trusty daily driver.

I bought my '00 Evolution Orange Miata in '01, and the only way she'll ever leave my garage is over my dead body. But no, I don' t plan to be buried in her -- what a waste of a lovely car!

I bought Roxy (the 8) with every intention of keeping her forever as one of the very first RX-8s to arrive in California. However, she's been plagued with more bad luck than any car I've ever owned (hood and windshield replaced after being hit with a large chunk of road debris, radiator hoses replaced after being chewed by rats, then getting severely rear-ended on the freeway to the tune of $17,000 in damage).

As much as I'll miss her, I really don't feel comfortable keeping her for the long term. Her repairs have been so extensive that she's got three different paints on her, the only original body panels left are her front fenders, doors, and roof, and the side windows are the only original glass. She's not the same car I bought. :(

12 Years

I owned my Integra for 12 years--sold it for around 20% of the purchase price. I calculated the cost of ownership, minus insurance, gas, routine maintenance, and it came in at $95 a month. (This did include all repairs.) I guess this is the classic case of why long-term ownership is cheaper than other means of driving a car. saving $200/month for 12 years = $28,800, about what I paid in cash for my new Rx8!

automaton 02-01-2005 03:12 PM

usually about two years and then I tend to be tired of the car. I now have a few different cars (at the same time) and I think I will end up staying content with allof them longer than otherwise.

Grabitquick 02-01-2005 03:34 PM

Prior to the RX-8, 4 cars in 28 years = 7 years per car on average. (I hang on to cars longer than girlfriends, if I like them.)

markd 02-01-2005 03:36 PM

I'm afraid I won't be able to keep my 8 very long--I'm driving it into the ground! 11,500 miles in almost 6 months! I can't stop driving her, though. She's quite addictive :(

dazygirl415 02-01-2005 03:46 PM

First car: 92 Chevy Cavalier, 3 yrs, given to me by parents & handed down to sister
Second car: 98 Ford Escort ZX2, 5 yrs, first car I bought on my own, sold it when it was paid off for the 8
Third car: 04 RX8, 4 months and counting...

Blue87Sport 02-01-2005 03:48 PM

1980 RX-7: 7 years
1987 RX-7: 17 years
2004 RX-8: Until I die or it does
2024 Delorean time machine: -35 years

At least the first three are true. :) I've had a rotary powered daily driver since 1980. I plan to keep that streak going for a long time.

therm8 02-01-2005 04:14 PM

I've had 5 cars in the last 6 years. Some of those overlap, giving me 2 cars at a time. i get the new car itch every now and then, but I've been fighting it off fairly well lately. Still looking for a project car though.

rodmeister 02-01-2005 05:43 PM

1970 Toyota Corona 12 years (sold)
1982 Mazda RX-7 10 years (stolen)
1992 Dodge Stealth 12 years (sold)
2004 RX-8

Basically I keep cars for 12 years, unless stolen - then it's 10 years.

rxeightr 02-01-2005 05:48 PM

Of my current rides:
One I've had for 30 years
Another for 24 years
The RX-8 is just 18 months.

Appears I'll be keeping the RX-8 for a while?
