EAST MOON 07-21-2004 09:02 PM

Hot news to the lover of Japanese Sports car.

From a newspaper this morning in Japan. (07 22 04)
Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc decided to abolish
the Self-Regulation control of 280hp to the Japanese vehicle.

It seems that they realized that their f**lish law at last.

Oh its about time !!!! I think we are going to see some serious factory tuned stock engine coming out soon !!

Thanks for news Buddy !

yes good find.

I thought the 280 bhp figure was only a "gentleman's agreement" between the manufacturers and was what they advertised. The cars would have more in practice.

however, if my info is wrong, my bad

either way, cool news

Mockngbrd 07-22-2004 01:22 AM

sounds good to me... looks like we're gonna see some serious horsepower from Japan soon... if they can do so well with their 280BHP cars....wonder what's gonna happen now... :P

Any link to the paper's site? or scanned confirmation? Just curious what else was stated.

Inconsequential 07-22-2004 03:57 AM

2 words come to mind... Supra? and RX7?

Saint_Spinner 07-22-2004 12:04 PM

Its too bad it only came out now...it seems as though the future of Japanese sports cars is dead....theyre killing off the Mr2, Celica, S2000, NSX, Rx-7 with no plans for future releases....Seems like NIssan is the only one making sports cars...

Feras 07-22-2004 12:51 PM

what about Mazda, while the RX8 may not be a true sports car, you did mention killing off a FWD sporty coupe so i just wanted to bring it back up to two companies that care about performance

It'll be interesting to see what this does to stated power outputs on all the 280hp cars currently for sale. Now if BMW and Mercedes would kill their stupid 155mph limiters...

T.

Feras 07-22-2004 02:07 PM

is that 155mph (250kph) speed limit a german law thing or just bMW and Mercedes playing nice?

David_M 07-22-2004 03:23 PM

the 280 HP rule was always a gentlmans aggrement. Several cars in the last few years have benn well above that figure. the R34 Skyline for example is estimated to be at about 320 hp stock, the newest NSX also is said to be at about 300 hp. They likely got rid of this rule because with ever faster JDM cars appearing all with 280 hp the ratings were clearly untrue.

Exactly. As all the Japanese companies were spending more and more for HP bragging rights, they instituted this 'gentleman's agreement' to cap output at 280 hp. However, they all still pretty much continued to build more and more powerful cars (while advertising them at 280). When they all ran out of money in the late 90s, this stopped being such a big issue. However, now that power is all the rage again--and technology has pushed HP numbers higher and higher--the manufacturers are finally admitting that this arbitrary limit is silly.

This just paves the way for the the new RX-7 at 350HP. heeeheee

m477 07-22-2004 08:41 PM

Great news, although it's not like any of them ever followed that agreement anyway. Now I think they should release the actual output numbers of all the "280hp" cars from the last 15 years.

shelleys_man_06 07-22-2004 09:58 PM

So where is my 5000 hp RX-8?

RobDickinson 07-26-2004 05:48 AM

280bhp was always a joke lol.

Its easy to work out , torque * rpm / 5252 doesnt lie. so over 280llb/ft at 5k rpm and its broke .

As for germany's 155mph limit, thats an agreement (not law), one which Porsche dont take part in.

Rotary Nut 07-26-2004 05:01 PM

Yeaaahhh Doggie!

Hey do they still have those silly ass laws concerning engine size and speeds for motorcycles there in the land of the rising sun? Like those friggin' buzzers and lights when you exceed 55kph?
