Wonder if Mazda will have anything to compete in this segment?

Well if they do it will definitely be styled better... that civic is not good looking at all.

Agreed. It looks like a miniature CrossTour... :puke:
Or worse, the Lancer Sportback. :puke: :puke:

Not sure I understand what you are talking about.

Mazda already offers the Mazda 3 hatch, which you can get the 184 hp 2.5 engine in. That beats the Honda Civic hatch by 9 hp or 4 hp, depending on engine choice in the Honda.

The best part is that Mazda doesn't punish people with a CVT if they can't shift for themselves.

In fact, to the right of your article, Car and Driver very clearly ranks the Mazda 3 as number 1 in that segment, 2 spots above the current Civic.

BC, but turbo! That is all most people see first.

Bladecutter 08-21-2016 03:21 PM

Putting a turbo engine into a car doesn't make the entire experience better.
Then again, look at what forum I'm posting this to.

I know at least one of you installed a turbo on your lawnmower.

As a former 2008 Mazdaspeed3 GT owner myself, many of us are waiting for the next Mazdaspeed model with 300hp ,300 foot pounds of torque, and maybe all-wheel drive this time around. Dropping in the new CX-9 engine gets close. Mazda has already acknowledged that it would fit in both the Mazda3 and Mazda6.

Here is a shot of my 2008 RX8 and my 2008 Mazdaspeed3 GT (one year before the hood scoop) together in my driveway in New Jersey. Sold the Speed3 GT a couple of years ago. I do miss it's hp and torque. I added a Mazdaspeed CAI to the Speed3. Car and Driver mag also did the same to their tested Speed3 GT,and with its direct-injected turbo engine this addition bumped the stock rated 283hp up to 300hp ,and over 300ft. pounds of torque. A wild ride with the torque steer, but plenty fun. Faster than a n/a RX8, zero to 60, and top speed (155 mph) . Though the RX8 is better balanced and handles better, so it could outrun the Speed3 GT on a twisty track.

Note: Yes for those Mazdaspeed3 GT experts, that is a power moonroof on my Speed3 GT. No moonroof was any option on the Speed3 GT, but i had my Mazda dealer install a Mazda3 power moonroof on my car, as a condition of sale. Cost me more, but boy the overhead views of stars were great at night, and the car was cooler on those hot but sunny days made for the roof being open without the a/c on. What a sleeper that car was on the road! Surprised many who thought it was just your average hatchback. (no illegal driving, of course)

Cheers !

A nice car, your Madaspeed 3 was.
But the new "turbo" Civic coupe isn't a return to that overpowered hatchback segment.
It's just Honda's way of offering a pair of "premium" engines into one of their best selling lines of small cars.

Like I said before, the Mazda 3 already competes with the 2 engines Honda is offering with the 2.5 engine. Adding in the turbo version with 250 hp and 310 torque, while very fun to think about, is what they have been actively saying that they are not planning on doing.

But don't worry, people will wreck CX-9's soon enough, and you can pull the drivetrain out of one, and create your own new MazdaSpeed 3, in due time.

This one time, at band camp......
:)

But really though, drop the word "Turbo" along with Vtec, and your neighborhood ricers go crazy. :mchase:

redcivic 08-23-2016 09:23 AM

Yep, because a week after release there will be 10 turbo upgrade kits for it, Torque Steer for everyone!

I think the better thing is, I can watch them try to fight with the roads and holes in their "TurbostancedDOHCvtec" pressure cooker. Then laugh as my 8 spits flames:FIREdevil

Yeah it's all fun and games until you are spitting flames while getting walked by a grocery getter.
