Help with a 94 honda civic

So I've got a 94 Honda civic that has been in the driveway since the terrible snow storms in the end of February. I live near Philadelphia. I tried to jump it the other day and the battery wouldn't hold a charge, so i got a new battery. Now when I try to start it, it lets out a ear piercing screech and the engine revs but doesn't hold idle, it just dies.

I know the belts are slipping and might need be to be replaced, but why does it die. Do you think my alternator could be frozen or a pulley? It has 2 accessory belts one that drives the PS and one for the alternator. It doesn't have AC.

If any of you car guys could share some light it would be nice. It would be nice to know where to start.

It needs to relearn it's idle map.

Tighten/replace the belts, check all the fluids, and then give it a drive. 10 min should get you back idling and running right.

Nah i don't believe this would be the problem. When I hold in the gas the belt starts burning and then it still immediately dies. It is meeting some heavy resistance there. It doesn't merely cough and idle and then die, it just dies.

I'd take the belts off and try starting it. If it fires up ok then you'll know your Alt or PS pump is siezed.

OR you could just push it off a cliff(obligitory honda hate comment :) )

Instead of taking off the belts, just have a friend start it and you watch the pulleys. If there is any resistance, or if you see it spinning in a funny way, rip that mother flower off. Is all of your maintenance up to date?

Likely the idler pulley or the alternator.....

Take off the belt...both of those should turn freely without any grinding or noises
