Gas on Paint
I was wondering if anybody has seen this. My buddy has a white STi and a few times some gas has run on to the paint while filling up. Well, in less than a week his paint under the gas door has begun to turn yellow. He's washed it and it is in the paint or clear coat. Does anyone know what might get this out or make it look better?

Sounds like the clearcoat has been damaged. Might try rubbing compound but you could end up removing all the clearcoat before it looks okay. At that point you have to be zealous about wax. How many is "a few times"?

He said twice in one week and he noticed it around 3-4 days after the last fillup. He thought it would be fine until he had a chance to wash it over the weekend. He's very meticulous with his car so I believe him. I know he waxed his car with Meguire's NXT less than a month ago (if that makes a difference). I thought he might try to clay bar it and if that doesn't do anything try some rubbing compound.
He also said Subaru is known to have crappy paint jobs. I don't know if that's true or not but he is a big Subaru fan so it might be true. The whole thing is strange to me. I would think there would be a lot more white cars on the road with yellow paint under the gas door if this was a common problem. |
Well, my buddy stopped by this morning. He said with a little elbow grease and rubbing compound the discoloration under his gas cap is gone.
