Ford Motor recalls costly GT supercar

About 450 vehicles will be brought in to fix defect, which may cause loss of control.

By Eric Mayne / The Detroit News

Ford Motor Co. is recalling its $140,000 Ford GT supercar to repair a defect that could cause loss of control.

Nearly 450 vehicles - all Ford GTs built to date - are affected by a suspension component problem that originated with a supplier, said spokeswoman Kristen Kinley. The part can crack because of a casting error.

"If it cracks, it could cause the wheel to become unstable," said Kinley, who would not identify the supplier. "And if the wheel becomes unstable at high speed, that's a safety issue."

The recall could tarnish the kudos Ford received for the fast-track engineering process it used to develop the 550-horsepower two-seater. Ford rushed the GT into production to mark the automaker's centennial in 2003.

"Maybe they weren't quite as thorough as they needed to be," said Bill Visnic, senior technical editor of the Southfield-based trade publication, Ward's AutoWorld. "If I were somebody who bought a GT and was exercising it a bit as it was designed to do, I'd be certainly a little annoyed. This wasn't the dome light switch that didn't work."

The recall was voluntary, Kinley said. There were no complaints or accidents related to the defect, which was discovered during an inspection .

Of the 448 vehicles affected by the recall, 111 are in the hands of private owners. Ford has contacted the owners and warned them not to drive the car until the automaker determines how to fix the problem, Kinley said. Ford will pick up vehicles in private hands.

I don't know where it says in the article that they don't know how to fix it. Maybe it's because they just found out about and and I'm sure they'll work something out.

no shit - what a dumbass comment

Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to pity people who can afford a 140,000 dollar car

mysql101 12-21-2004 09:59 AM

Gambit, money is just money. They are human like you and me.

You would pity yourself if you had one.. even though it doesn't look like you'd own this ford. ;)

Yeah, I'd probly be pretty pissed off, spending all that money on something that might break and kill me.

I hate ford because I bought a taurus with 60K miles on it for 3,000 bucks, had to put another 1000 in to fix it, constantly had to add antifreeze because it spit it all over the engine, then the damn thing blew up in about 2 months.

8's enough 12-21-2004 10:05 AM

damn , and i was going to trade my 8 in for 1 of those.j/k

murix 12-21-2004 10:35 AM

A Ford GT has nothing to do with a Taurus.

I once bought an old 89 Accord as a daily driver for $3k because I believed it would be reliable. Turned out to be a money trap in terms of costs and repairs before I just got rid of it.

Is it safe for me to assume that the NSX is now a pos?

News flash. As much as I hate to say it (or hear it) we are Ford owners anyway.

Not true, they do have a fix and the part will be available very soon. I sold one of these cars last night and the customer knows about the recall and will not drive his car until it is fixed. The parts should arrive in the 2nd week of January.

It's not a tumor.... I mean, it's not a Ford! (Not that Fords are tumors.) :D

My buyer paid $237,000.

GotBass 12-21-2004 11:46 AM

last paragraph - "warned them not to drive the car until the automaker determines how to fix the problem"

that to me sounds like they dont know what to do about it

no we aren't...ford just has their name attached to mazda..they own 51% of the shares..they have absolutely NO say so in the design/manufacture or research of the RX-8..or any Mazda for that matter...

webba_az 12-21-2004 12:05 PM

Technically though, of course, owning 51% of the shares they can have whatever say they want.. just devil's advocate :D

mysql101 12-21-2004 12:13 PM

Far as I know, Ford owns around 31% of mazda.

Regardless, a Mazda isn't a Ford. You guys know who owns Lamborghini and Bentley, right?

Doesn't the 3 share its platform with the volvo s40 and the upcoming ford focus?

Audi? didn't know they owned bentley though, thats sad. Anyway, Lamborghinis are hardly Lamborghinis since audi bought them. The Gallardo has an a6's centre console for cryin out loud. It was a sad day when audi bought them.

If you bought a Taurus with 60K miles for just $3000, then you probably got what you paid for... I mean, there must have been a reason why the price was only 3K.
