Ferrari $1200 Oil Change~!
 

Was reading an Edmund's long-term road test review at 3500 miles for a 550M Maranello -- a little dreaming never hurt anyone. Here's an excerpt from their June 2004 update:

"The bad news is that oil changes for Ferraris don't come cheap. Our 550 required 12 quarts of oil, six and a half hours of labor and a few miscellaneous parts, resulting in a bill of over $1,200!"

Of course if you can afford a Ferrari, you can afford the maintenance, but SIX HOURS of labor? Gimme a break!

As I know they use only the special shell helix engine oil which cost approx $80 per quart. so that why cost so much.

a porche boxster oil change can cost $400 I read, new meaning to the word rip-off

though if you can spend $100K on a car I am sure the oil change won't make you flinch

...reflect the complexity of a dry-sump system? From what I've heard, race-inspired technology like that details a lot more than your standard drain-plug removal! :rolleyes:

They have spent $1237.31 in the two years they have owned the car. Thats not too bad. Although, they only have 3500 miles on the thing.

That's a lot but don't these cars have longer periods of time between oil changes?

Better yet wait for the $12k clutch job at 25k miles or the $5k timing belt every 15k miles. Ferrari maintenance costs $1 per mile.

BTW; even if one can afford to pay $250k for the car and the $1/mi maintenance that does not mean they are willing or happy to do it. There are a ton of ex-Ferrari current Miata/Corvette/Porsche owners out there.

If you really love cars and you can actually afford a ferrari, the maintenance payments shouldn't bother you. If the $1/mile does bother you, A) you can't afford the car B) you don't appreciate the car for what it is.

Since you decided to tell us like it is I will respond. One of my business partners has a small fleet of sports cars that he loves. He also is worth in excess of $250 million. The ridiculous costs bother him. I am worth considerably less than the aformentioned amount but when I had my spendy days and had the Ferrari and BMW I discovered that I still did not appreciate being ripped off. I now drive a Miata and a Caddy CTS-V. Wealthy people don't get to be where they are by being suckers.

I could barely afford to buy a Ferrari (thanks to some good investing ) if I wanted too, but I would not be able to keep up with the $1/mile and start my life at the same time. Although, my parents basement is pretty nice .

I am sure that there are a lot of rich people, like your friend, who just don't feel the payments are worth it, and that is fine. They fall under category B. Personally; I love the cars, the racing technology, the sexy lines, and the soulful performance.....The whole package. I would, given the financial situation, loose no sleep over the maintenance costs, if it meant enjoying a vehicle filled with so much passion.

The bottom line, Ferrari's are not for everyone. Some because of financial reasons, some for other feelings. However, I do no doubt for a second, that Ferrari and I have a date in the future. For now, I am stuck with my M3 and my baby girls.

Dry sump oil changes? I change my own oil in my 911. Two drain plugs. 12 quarts of oil and a filter costs me $25. Takes 15 minutes. There is no complexity to draining oil in a dry sump. And some of the prices quoted above are a little off mark.
