Interesting review sort of mixed on some things but overall impressed and thinks it a better improvement than the old vs new 6 looks wise

this tidbit about that new Diesel is very interesting


The 1.6 petrol should account for two-thirds of all Mazda 3s sold in Europe and it’s reasonably quiet and smooth, but the small diesel is punchier and a lot quieter than the big diesels. Plus it’ll do 62.7mpg (compared to the equivalent new Golf’s 57.6) and only produce 119g/km.

How hard could it be to actually bring this car to the states? Do they really think they couldn't sell 30k of them as soon as they hit the lots?

The car spits out only 114g/km CO2 emissions which makes it into Band B on the Fuel economy chart making this car a serious competitor in the eco friendly market.

Surprisingly this superb Supermini has a sporty drive with a firm suspension, with extra grip around corners.

the slick dash design is a huge leap forward and you will be pleasantly surprised with some of the features that come standard including an MP3-compatible CD player with steering wheel controls and air conditioning.

For a Supermini, the Mazda 2 has plenty of space for four adults, and can seat five at a push. Boot space is probably what you would expect for a car of this size which is enough for every day use.

and again these new diesels they are using are remarkable for their refinement AND their economy


average of 65.7 MPG, the respective average Fuel cost of driving 12,000 miles is £938. This car can seriously save you some money.
Avg 65.7- its highway is actually much higher.

isnt there an "X" prize for a production 100 mpg car? why doesnt Mini or Mazda mate a hybrid to one of these really efficient small diesels and claim the prize already?

VW is bringing the Polo to the US, a Polo with a small TDI would likely get over 60 if the emissions requirements don't kill it.

I've looked at the VW CC and there's a good chance both my Mazdas are history if the TDI version of that car makes it to the US (provided they still offer the 6-speed manual, of course). Love VW or hate them, that's still a sharp car with a reasonable price tag.

I've entertained the thought of getting the diesel engine for my Mazda6 imported, but I doubt I'd ever recoup the money. I do hope Mazda grows the balls to bring a diesel over here. As far as Japanese makes, only Honda and Subaru seem to be committed to importing diesels so far.

I thought the reason they weren't bringing the Mazda2 here was that Ford was planning to use the platform to build an uglier car with a crappier interior and call it the new Fiesta.

I'll never understand the small diesel market of the US. Bmw finally is selling the 335d but its hardly economical compared to other diesels (33mpg IIRC.) Hell even Mbenz is now commercially advertising there bluetec diesels.

I bet new born babies that a 65mpg mazda 2 would sell fantastic here in the states, hell all of the prius owners would yearn for another 20 mpg.

it seems to me that the mazda3 is the one that does 62.7mpg.

and i think it will sell like hot cakes if sold in the usa. in fact, i think that is such incredibly good mpg, that the average us citizen (with no knowledge of europe) will not believe it at first.

Even brands with overtly sporty pretensions must be concerned with their fuel economy and emissions, a point that is further evidenced by Mazda's intent to launch start-stop technology in the U.K. on its newest 3, which has proven to be the Japanese brand's most popular model. Before the end of 2009, Mazda plans to add the eco-friendly tech to both the 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter gas-burning four-cylinder engines. Oddly, the car's optional diesels, which are significantly more fuel efficient than their petrol counterparts, will miss out on this bit of tech. It's interesting to note, however, that the 2.0-liter MZR four is the only powerplant is available in Japan, Europe and America, so it seems possible all three markets could benefit from stop-start if Mazda were so inclined.

Those that care little of fuel savings will be happy to welcome the Mazdaspeed (MPS across the pond) version of the 3 hatchback that is slated for release in March at the Geneva Motor Show. A twin-clutch DSG transmission is also reportedly in the works for the 2010 model year, so there's certainly plenty to look forward to from the Zoom Zoom company.

As reported by Autoblog, guess that comment is fueled by rumors of the focus RS with this transmission.

nah kersh they definitely mean the Diesel and not the petrol. the 1.6 petrol engine gets a 40+ avg tho

yeah the 1.6 numbers are


Urban Fuel : 31.7 mpg = 11km/liter (RM1 for 5.7km)*
Extra Urban : 49.6 mpg = 17km/liter (RM1 for 8.8km)*
Combined : 40.9 mpg = 15km/liter (RM1 for 7.8km)*
Theoretical Range to Empty : 495 miles = 796km
