Draining fuel tank?

Seattle was hit with a wind storm last night which knocked power out for a 700,000 or so people, including me.

I have a gas(oline) powered generator which is keeping things running at home, but it needs fueling. One of the problems with a power outage is that the gas stations lose the ability to pump gas, so I was thinking of using gas from one of the cars.

In the past I've tried syphoning the tank, but this just doesn't seem to work very well. So I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions as to how to do this? I thought about disconnecting the fuel line at the filter and using the fuel pump to pump the gas into a gas can, but it seems to me that the fuel pump and battery are probably not up to pumping 5 gallons of gas at a time. Would I burn out the fuel pump? Anyone done this?

I have plenty of tubing to use for symphoning, I've just had problems getting the tube fully into the tank and then getting enough of a pressure differential to get a reliable flow.

The post is 18 years old and his last post was in 2017, so I don't think you're getting a response.
