Old ancient proverb... ok, ok, it's something my dad instilled into me around 25 years ago:

"If you take care of it, it will take care of you."

I have taken care of my 8 since day one (revved it, used synthetic, changed the oil every 3k and checked it almost every fillup) and I have had a lot of problems but I drive it pretty hard and it has seen quite a few track days. I do have an 04' so some of the problems are specific I think to early build models. At times I am very frustrated with this car but after checking things out I am seriously considering a an 09' R3 but I will wait to see if the reliability changes make a difference.

I just think the RX8 was released a little early and the renesis is just not a reliable engine when driven hard in hot areas. There is a lot of BS on this site so take things with a rain of salt. People in my area have had 07's with engine failure while premixing and using synthetic so I just think the renensis is not a reliable engine. But the other problems with the 8 have been addressed I think since the 04's. But I can only speak of my own experiences and from what I have seen personally.

I have an 04. Only1 problem in 63,000 miles. It has never broken down and left me sitting. I have followed the owners manual from day 1. I have had to do no more maintenance on it than any other car I have owned. Race it and beat the hell out of it and stuff breaks and wears out sooner. Thats no different than any other car designed for street use. Study this forum and you will find that a lot of problems were created by the owners ie, high rpm launches, drag racing, burnouts, using lubricants not recommended by mazda ect. Recognize that it is not a race car and you will have far less problems. Just my opinion.

Easy_E1 08-10-2008 02:43 PM

Doesn't every car have problems?

and then after your vtac kicked your carbon fiber distributor got sucked into the engine housings and caused the pistons to shoot right out into the air killing migratory birds flying above your car

Yes, this car has MANY problems. Do not buy it. Get a civic.

btw

Truthfully the rx8 is one hell of a ride. Consider the following first become friends with a rotary mechanic rather it's third party or an actual Mazda technician. Next learn as much as you can take the car apart with that mechanic and get a better understanding what your dealing with. Than try to change as many crappy oem parts as you can. Like replacing the battery, engine mounts, install an intercooler, get mazport ignition solution, etc...etc....etc. I consider aftermaket parts the way to go if you want to enjoy the car longer. Every car is not built to perfection. However with a few buffs in and out that car will perform better than ever before no matter how many miles you have.

Oh? I'd be interested in that information since I've not been able to find a single engine failure here in Phoenix or the surrounding area when pre-mixing was used. Any idea what kind of pre-mix and the amount being used? What kind of synthetic oil?

The problem is not with the motor but with the compromises Mazda has had to make to get the car up to spec for emissions as well as gas mileage.

An interesting theory proposed to me was that daily high RPM runs helped keep engines healthy not just because it cleans carbon but because the max amount of OMP output would occur. The failures are heavily caused by oil starved motors.

Clearly there are two easy and cost effective solutions. Buy an accessport, buy the sohn adapter and install them both. Afterwards those problems are in the past.

Please be careful ............. at 30,701 miles it will ......................... BLOW ! :)

Ryan2008 08-11-2008 07:26 AM

This thread is pretty damn funny. Do yourself a favor, buy a civic. You know nothing about the rotary obviously and would probably destroy it. And these cars would probably destroy all your friends and their HonduhZ just to let you know. Piece of shit? I think not.

PBlue 08-11-2008 07:30 AM

yea my 50,000 mile warranty that came with the car didnt cover when my car blew up because it had over 30,000 miles on it... dam lawyers.
