Direct Injection Turbo

The new Masdaspeed 6, will be the first car released in America with a gasoline powered Direct Injection Turbo.

Here is a description of how it works.

Direct injection engines have the fuel injector mounted in the cylinder wall, instead of behind intake valves. This allows more control over the fuel-air mixure, and when combined with shaped headers, allows for more efficient combustion. This is accomplished by making the fuel-air mixture swirl in high concentrations in a certain portion of the combustion chamber. This results in locally heavy concentrations of fuel, enabling for compression detonation, but the average fuel-air mixture over the combusiton chamber is lower, enabling a more complete burn and higher fuel efficiency.

More Compression, Better Gas Milage

Cool...... thanks for clarifying.

Man I wonder what kinds of things you could do to get more performance on this car. It would be tricky since it was so tightly integrated with the direct injection.

Well cooling the intake air would be one thing, kind of hard to do with a turbo though.

I guess you could pretty easily swap out the turbo with a higher compression. This one is only 7.5 lb, so you could easily go to 12 without doing much dammage.

People have been talking about direct injection for a long time and I have oft seen it associated with Mitsubishi. It is great to see this technology coming since it holds out the promise of more power AND better fuel economy. Always glad to see Mazda pursuing leading technology in their vehicles.

A couple of upcoming turbo Audi models are also utilising this,
