Fuck hybrids. You can get comparable mileage with diesel and still have enough torque to actually enjoy your vehicle.

Of course, the way Amerika is headed, hybrids will be all we can buy in 5 to 7 years. I think I'm going to move to Europe sometime in the next decade.

I don't understand why this country is so afraid of diesels. With the diesel technology now, they are nothing close to what they used to be and I think consumers still think of diesels for what they used to be like. Black smoke, stinky, car shaking, not starting in winter, etc.

If you've got time on your hands, go test drive the new VW Jetta TDI. While the styling doesn't do much for me, the ride was not half bad. You can hardly tell the thing has a diesel engine, not to mention you could average close to 40mpg.

Oh believe me, I'm waiting for the Mark VI Golfs to hit showrooms. I'm a hatchback lover by nature, and the Jetta's looks have never done anything for me. Since Acura made their cars so damn ugly, I'm 95% sure my next car will be a VW. My only real decision is GTI or Golf TDI. VWoA is supposed to be *finally* offering the GTI in blue as a mid-2010 or 2011 paint option, which will sweeten the deal even more. Odds are good that the GTD won't make it here, but I can dream...

Why not just get the Jetta wagon TDI? It's not a bad looking car. Carries more stuff than a Golf too.

OK, I have to get back to patients now. Do some reading and if you still aren't convinced...then that's your problem.

Uh oh...global warming debate. Arbitrarily polluting the air isn't good for anybody or anything. That's not debatable. I just have a hard time pinning "climate change" on industrialized humanity when a single event like the Mt. Pinatubo or the Mt. Saint Hellens eruption spews more aerosols into the atmosphere over the course of 2 days than modern mankind has been able to produce in the last 100 years. I think the hacky sack kickers sensationalize our footprint on the planet as a means to their own end. And don't get me started on these "spare the air" days where gov't tells us to refrain from using gas powered lawn mowers and having a BBQ. Shut down the local airports for an hour if it's such a crisis. Our backyard BBQ is a fart in the wind compared to the emissions a single 747 pumps into the local ecology.

while we're at it.....let's either ban ocean shipping or turn them all into electric boats or sailships...

"Carbon dioxide from ships makes up an estimated 3 percent of the emissions caused by humans. Along with the CO2, the vessels discharge 2.2 million pounds of particulate matter annually and almost 30 percent of smog-forming nitrogen oxide gases, the study said. "

There are so many mistakes in the second link that it was sickening...

I have no desire for any hybrid.

Tree huggers have to realize that when you look at statistics regarding climate change, you have to use a window of time that is over 10's of thousands of years, or even millions of years. If the earth warmed up 1 degree in the last 100 years (or whatever stat they will use) that is not even a drop in the bucket of time over the grand scheme of things. It means absolutely nothing. Im one who thinks global warming is a complete political sham. Having said that, the good news is the cap and trade garbage is almost certain to be not even close to getting passed by congress, but if by some odd reason this thing happens, RIP 16X.

And for the VW guy...will the GTI be available in diesel in the US anytime soon? Thats one car I would definitely consider.

Clarkson is a demigod -

But let me be clear that hybrid cars are designed solely to milk the guilt genes of the smug and the foolish.
I want to have his babies.

Anthropogenic global climate change is a farce and a lie.

Today marks the death of pragmatism in the House. Well at least we had a good 200+ year run...

Global warming caused by humans is a lie.
Do your research.
Only reason why the governement put pressure on this and alter sicentific documents is to make it eaiser for the aliens to breath our atmoshere.
