Love that he didn't really get to the juicy bits until the 3rd to last paragraph on page 2. :) Classic Clarkson nonetheless.

TODreamer 05-22-2006 05:37 PM

I guess his model wasnt cutting boost at 4500rpms like all the other ones. Further, I'm surprised he didnt pick on the 100:0 "AWD" system

Japan8 05-22-2006 09:21 PM

No... the non-USDM market cars come with less power (read less boost) and haven't been having the same issues it seems. The engine is also used in the JDM MPV and the CX-7 as we all know. It's also found a home in the Mazdaspeed 3. It'll probably make its way into a Mazdaspeed MX-5 too.

Anyway, these lower hp tuning of the engine seem to have less (or none) issues with 91 vs 93 octane and pulling boost. It's probably because of Mazda stupidly upping the boost on a small turbo with the same intercooler to squeeze out more power for the US market. Sounds like bad engineering to me.

Me waiting MPS 3...

Sounds good from Clarkson's point of view ;).

I heard Fifth gear is doing a review on MPS6 and MPS3.

mysql101 05-22-2006 09:53 PM

holy crap. I read the entire first page and all I got out of it was something about bells and sandwiches.

He doesn't even start to talk about the car till halfway down page 2, and even then he's still talking about food.

thats a lot of posts .....Tak, have pics of your 8...like to see proof you are the driver of the THUNDER DOWN UNDER :)

That review was terribly boring to me. Maybe I'm too young or simply not british enough, but I had no idea what the hell he was talking about throughout most of that review.

toxin440 05-22-2006 11:13 PM

I agree -- it's a known fact the british can be long winded and boring with the writing, I read one paragraph after another thinking "okay wtf is he talking about maybe the next one will actually be about the Mazda... nope.

I like Clarkson for the most part - but to write 9 paragraphs of dribble and 2about the car is retarded. For this reason thats why I will only WATCH him and not read him.

Renesis_8 05-22-2006 11:38 PM

I skipped that rubbish and started reading on page 2

If you've ever watched top gear you'd understand.

"It'll probably make its way into a Mazdaspeed MX-5 too."
280ft/lbs in some FWD hatch... ummm...
280 ft/lbs in a miata... ummm... :Freak_ani
159 ft/lbs in the 8?..ummm...
Whats the problem mazda?

While I completely understand that the power level in the 8 is to maintain balance, that doesn't mean shyt if mazda doesn't make any money. Just becuase we get it doesn't mean anyone else does.

murix 05-23-2006 12:44 AM

My summary and interpretation of what Clarkson was trying to say. Mazda is a boring brand that builds exciting cars.

crossbow 05-23-2006 11:57 AM

If I'm not mistaken, britain also has significantly better octane gasoline then the states as well. Most of the problems in the states are coming from our piss poor gas. Even our 94 octane is pretty lame compared to the aussie's BP Ultimate 98 pwnstar extreme.

You're confused, they use different rating systems. The 98 octane in GB is RON and is about the same thing as our 90 octane.

Well, I have watched it. I was still completely lost in his sea of blather.

dupa12345 05-23-2006 04:24 PM

nice write up .. yeah we dont give a rats ass about itv or blair .. but we all know the 6 chassy looks like a too common and inconspicuous grocery getter .. but so what id rather have a leaner price tag than fake wood or chrome knobs .. with still the same monster kick

Maybe cause "all other ones" dont and cause there's nothing to pick on.

There's plenty, the MS6 is a pretty lame attempt at a AWD Sedan.

Gomez 05-24-2006 04:00 AM

I drove one for a day and hated it. The one standout dislike??? Very poor engine braking when changing down gears......you had to drop three cogs to slow it down.

Maybe this is a four cylinder turbo trait, I dunno....but I didn't like it one bit. I love the RX-8 manual gearbox and the Renesis' deceleration characteristics on a closed throttle......I barely use the brakes when I'm tooling about town. No way I'd swap an RX-8 for a turbo Mazda 6.

BoosTED 05-24-2006 05:01 AM

Very well put Gomez, I hadn't thought of that before much but I rarely use my brakes either.

The MS six does fill a niche, for those that need more room (5th passenger), want performance without the look. I was going to wait for the MS 6 back in '04 but fell in love with the 8, glad I did, glad I did.

Truthfully I expected a bit more out of it... let down no... it still has potential for upgrading, but it is a heavy car.

"It’s just a sensible, well-priced four-door saloon car . . . that goes like it’s running on a cocktail of Tabasco and horseradish." :) Yeah, that's pretty much the case.

Well then, color me confused and corrected!
