Cayman S vs. Z4 Coupe?

Since there's been allot of discussion elsewhere, and if I were leaving my '8 (which I'm not) it would be a choice between these two, I just thought I'd post a poll. Both very nice.

The best one line comparison I've seen is that the Porsche is a better 'all around" performer, whereas the Bimmer is the more 'muscle car' of the pair. I would say the Z4 is also the better bang for the buck.

What say you enlightened forum members?

i'm biased against porsches, 'cuz i don't like 'em  but it's more fair to compare the cayman s to the m coupe. the z4 coupe 3.0, however, is a better bargain. can you even access the cayman's engine?

Transam kid 01 02-17-2009 06:57 AM

The M coupe would be a better comparison. I would go with an M coupe if I were you...or just wait until the redesign is out with the TT inline 6 is out, it shouldn't be too long of a wait.

Why are you comparing the Cayman S vs the Z4 3.0? the Z4M is the comparison, and it's still cheaper than a Cayman S

Spin9k 02-17-2009 07:35 AM

The 2010 (or '09?) 320HP one Cayman S is argeably the perfect sports car. Not too big, not too heavy, not too expensive, yet powerful enough, just right...perfect balance... and virtually flawless handling. The changes made from the previous model are in many ways subtle, yet togehter they are substantial enough to improve it significantly.

The BMW? It's only my opinion, but it's an aging design in an awkward sneaker-shaped body, what BMW gracefully calls 'artful' I call old fashioned and outdated ... not to mention it has BMWs legendary reliability:rolleyes: going for it.

Audi R8, Cayman S, maybe the Z4 coupe.

DailyDriver2k5 02-17-2009 08:41 AM

The Cayman S hands down. Its mid engine, has a low and wide stance, doesn't look like a Porsche , lines from Italy. Handles on rails, very balance.

The Z4 coupe is attractive , one of the better designs from BMW, close to the Cayman S in overall packaging, yet its so far away. Great alternative to the S by any means.

SideOfBacon 02-17-2009 09:37 AM

hate BMWs, so from the poll options, was easy for me. Cayman S.

Huey52 02-17-2009 09:46 AM

Very insightful, thanks all.

Although I've seen some great deals on 2008 Z4 coupes, I've always had a soft spot for Porsche. "There is no alternative." ;)

Some nice enhancements upcoming for the 2009 Cayman S !

JRichter 02-17-2009 10:15 AM

Yeah, I love the Z4 a lot but still see the Cayman as the best all around sports car available right now.

YaXMaNGTO 02-17-2009 09:19 PM

If you had said M Coupe, I would have voted for it.

If you had had Cayman "non S" versus Z4 Coupe... wow. Dead even for me.

jones75254 02-17-2009 10:21 PM

Cayman vs. Z4 3.0-----------I take the Z4 without a doubt.

Cayman S vs. Z4 M-----------As much as i love this particular Bimmer, the new changes to the Cayman S just may be enough to sway me, its a pretty sick package inside and out.

Kevo 03-26-2009 08:04 PM

I think I will take the bimmer. :)

I am not biased...AT ALL. Lol

Huey52 03-27-2009 06:07 AM

LOL Well, you're certainly entitled to be biased. Sweet ride! :)

Cayman S will be superior to a regular Z4. The M Z4 with more hp will outgun the Cayman, but the Porsche telepathic handling is unmatched. But the M is such a hooligan of a car that its actually fun too. Hmm...

Huey52 03-27-2009 01:57 PM

The upcoming retractable hardtop Z4 adds yet another dimension of consideration. Hmmmmm.... indeed!

kersh4w 03-27-2009 02:11 PM

dude. the upcoming z4 weighs 3500lbs.

Not hard to believe...although I am still trying to figure out how BMW weighs their cars. Mine is supposed to weigh in at 3230lbs. but when weighed by an independent here locally with 3/4 tank of gas it was at 3073lbs. :dunno: Go figure.

BlueEyes 03-28-2009 09:52 PM

European weights include 75kg for driver and luggage with a full tank.

User24 03-28-2009 09:52 PM

If you have 2009 CS, and someone passing by says "What year is your 350z?" then what do you say?

BlueEyes 03-28-2009 09:59 PM

Ummmm...what? you make no sense....

User24 03-28-2009 10:33 PM

Of course I make senses what are you speaking?!

That explains it...thanks!

Huey52 03-30-2009 07:32 AM

A Porsche could never be misconstrued to be a 350Z. But I do get your point. There are only just so many aerodynamic automotive shapes and therefore there is a very slight similarity.
