Bye bye GMC and Pontaic

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=14880

So long my friend.

Hell yes to drop that GMC.

not so for Pontaic, Pontaic brand has some decent Sedans lately. hmm

Rhawb 04-16-2009 03:56 PM

"Say guys, we finally have an arm of this company putting out desirable cars, what do you think we should do with them?"

"I think we should definitely get rid of them, but let's keep Buick around just to make auto enthusiasts gnash their teeth in confused fury."

:icon_no2:

zoom44 04-16-2009 03:58 PM

every other article i have read in the last couple of days have said GM will keep Chevy Caddy Buick and GMC while potiac saturn hummer etc will go into the "bad" gm side of the bankruptcy.

there is no reason to drop GMC. that truck brand does really well in general and always has a slightly different look to the trucks than Chevy that appeals to different people

Easy_E1 04-16-2009 04:00 PM

Just goes to prove they still don't know how to run a business.

ndhoffma 04-16-2009 04:04 PM

sadly though, its probably what needs to happen... but why keep buick? ugh

Theres a reason Ford has lost several companies it owned over the past few years, and they appear to be still in the game

myriadshalaks 04-16-2009 04:09 PM

pontiac makes a pretty decent car, some of them are pretty nice. it's weird. both saturn and pontiac, i would have thought, should have been top performers.

pontiac has been pretty consistently putting out good cars since the introduction of the grand am. and saturn has recently gotten a ton better.

i've been seeing lots of g5s and vues on the road lately. i see no buiks. maybe there's an enclave here or there. but it's very rare to see one.

so wtf?

nycgps 04-16-2009 04:15 PM

Yep, this is the part that confuses me.

Keep Buick and kick Pontaic off ? Oh come ON !

Saturn deserves to die. nothing really decent there.

GMC ... Its a truck brand, Truck is dying. at least for now. so yea ...

Chevy ... Hmm ... lots of kids still want a piece of Cobalt SS ? I guess.

Red Rex 04-16-2009 04:20 PM

Nothing I won't miss. Never cared for Pontiac's style except for the last generation Firebird/Trans Am. Chevy and Cadillac are GM's big players. Everything else seems expendable. Perhaps Buick is doing better than we know. With the economic crisis people are forced to turned to generic car companies like Buick, Hyundai, Kia, etc. You would think those brands would go under but they seem to be holding their own since people can no longer afford a Nissan or Cadillac or Ford. I'm sure GM will be fine. Fresh new CEO's to run the show and they still have around 40 days or so to rebuild their spending program. Chrysler on the other hand :uhh:

m477 04-16-2009 04:34 PM

Pontiac needs to be gone like a decade ago... every single car they make looks like a 80's POS Grand Am - mechanical bits are irrelevant, most consumers don't really want such a hideous turd in their driveway.

They should kill Saturn, Buick, Chevy(cars) and Pontiac. Then market all the cars as Opels with the European branch doing all the design work. Trucks will be Chevy and Caddy will be luxury vehicles. With a company that's losing market share as ridiculously fast as GM, I don't see why they need more than 3 brands.

I can't believe you used "good cars" and Grand Am in the same sentence.

shazy 04-16-2009 04:53 PM

Pontiac is pretty good now, I like their G8 :) Plus 50cent is supporting them!

I hate Buick, always will and always have, except for the GN. It's for old people and the cars are shit. But Reliable, because everything else is shit and that's the only thing they have on them.

9krpmrx8 04-16-2009 05:20 PM

The G8 and GTO are okay but the interiors have historically failed miserably.

I agree! The Iraqi people are starting to import hummers! Clearly American's are not the only people who like big cars.

Iraqis Importing Civilian Hummers

nycgps 04-16-2009 07:43 PM

i thought they're not allowed to export stuff to Iraq ?

ANZ 04-16-2009 09:52 PM

My guess this has more to do with the dealer networks and branding/marketing. The actual vehicles are so much alike that it does not matter. Heck, they could import Holdens car and call them Chevies instead of Pontiacs. Saturns were different but, again, there is no reason why they can't be rebadged as Chevies.

I hate that they are getting rid of Pontiac but I kind of understand what they might be trying to do. Pontiac is somewhat in the same segment of the market as Chevy so they should stop competing with themselves. Buick is more of their mid level car and Caddy is their top of the line. They are almost copying Toyota. The only problem with their thinking though is that Toyota has one brand that is more of an entry level brand in Scion (they lost this once they let Saturn go), one brand that is the mass seller in the main Toyota brand (to include anything from compacts to SUVs which is more head to head with Chevy) and the luxury brand in Lexus (head to head with Caddy). I partially understand the move of keeping Buick but it's for the wrong reason IMHO...I believe it's a move to keep going head to head with Ford which may actually be more of who they are emulating. Ford still has their main brand in Ford (matches up against Chevy), Mercury (matches up with Buick), and Lincoln (matches up with Cadillac). Ford is not such a great example for them...they need to stop worrying about Ford and shoot to beat out Toyota and Honda first and foremost then worry about Ford but if they beat out Toyota and Honda I think Ford would follow. Just my own observation.

shipdriver 04-17-2009 07:40 AM

I can't believe it took this situation to kill GMC. GMC is why Chevy trucks lose the sales race to Ford every year. Buick has to stay because it is (believe it or not) one of the most reputable car brands in China. This may make 'enthusiasts' cringe, but then again Toyota is very successful at making cars for people who don't like cars.

This is why Buick is staying - very strong international sales.

mscamp02 04-17-2009 08:18 AM

This really makes me sad.....I kinda liked pontiac to be honest

You cant really compare Saturn to Scion. Scion's main target is the teenage group between 16-30. Saturn is for more mature group like 30-ish or more. This is just Another example of "GM's management group doesnt know how to run their business"

You ever seen a Teenager drive a Saturn ? Hardly. While you see MOST of the Scion drivers are teens(or young adults)

Not to mention Saturn has NEVER turned a profit in its existence. Broken even and lost but never gained.

Lately, There are some Saturn commercials, about like oh how we take care of customers and 0% apr for 60 months and so and so ... I was like, "Yeahhhhhh, rightttttt"

Ok, Now Saturn, you can go to hell.

Coop '04 04-17-2009 08:49 AM

Also they are one of the most particular about getting the 12K 24K 36K mile services done at the dealer or void your warranty. At about 700 (minimum) dollars per service...they win either way.

I wonder which roadster they will keep, the solstice or the sky. I know they only differ in slight degrees but definitely not room for both. Guessing it will Chevy sky or solstice (depending on whichever one they keep).

I'm also thinking that the Pontiac G8 will become the new Chevy Impala SS...at least that is what I'm hoping. The Impala SS never should have left GM's line-up. And no, the fail-wheel drive wImpala SS does not count.

GM is finally trimming/slicing the fat

mscamp02 04-17-2009 09:20 AM

As long as the G8 GXP sticks ill be happy
