BusinessWeek: Most Iconic Cars of the Past 25 Year

BusinessWeek chose the 10 most iconic cars since 1984. The mostly ill-chosen list is a clear reason why BW is a business magazine and not a automotive publication.

1. Mazda Miata
2. Lotus Elise
3. Toyota Prius
4. Audi TT
5. New VW Beetle
6. Pagani Zonda
7. BMW Z8
8. Mini Cooper
9. Hummer H2
10. Bentley Continental GT

I don't think the Audi TT, Z8 and Bentley Continental GT should be on the list.

The Miata is first place without a doubt though, but the rest is ehhh.

bse50 06-16-2009 05:50 AM

Here in italy that list would have been very different. Our "managers" buy other kind of cars.

DailyDriver2k5 06-16-2009 06:12 AM

Lotis Elise Iconic? Iconic as my left shoe with mud on it.
Audi TT, i don't think so! Pagani, fabulous car, iconic car, no.

Iconic cars are cars that are recognized throughout the world like a Lamborghini , Ferrari , Porsche GT2 ,Corvette, Mustang. Those are Iconic cars because of there vast history, racing roots, prestige, etc.

That list must of been tabulated by a woman, what do you know, mrs. Helen Walters. Thats all that needs to be said.

In order to determine the validity of the list, one must do the 2 following things.
One, who the list is targeted towards.

BusinessWeek = NOT a car enthusiast's magazine.
It's catering to, well, businessmen.

Secondly, I looked up the definition of Iconic on the Webster website, and the first definition is as follows:

a usually pictorial representation

So for businessmen everywhere, not just message board car nerds (like us), this is a pretty valid list IMHO.

^ Not bad, would definitely pick Skyline GT-R over evo though...
(Yes, I know there was a skyline GT-R in the 1970s, but the introduction of "godzilla" in 1989 was one of the biggest automotive releases ever)

I wanted to pick cars that were accessible to the general public. Even though the GT-R starts around $70K - nobody pays that little for it.

Don't bash BW too much. That's where I found my car! They had a nice article on the Mazda RX-8. They loved it.

5. New VW Beetle

OMG.

tjbourgoyne 06-16-2009 08:45 PM

Since 1984? some of those cars didn't exist until the late 90's, and when did the Prius hit the market? Something like 2004. Even the Miata didn't hit the streets until 1989. Whoever wrote this needs a good Ram Jam.

4. Toyota Camry
5. Ford Mustang GT
6. Toyota Prius
7. Ford F-150
8. Mini Cooper

This list represents, to me, the cars that have influenced the industry the most. They are the cars that will be remembered for whatever it is they brought to us all whether that be automotive excellence, performance, efficiency, reliability, companionship, or lifestyle.
