Bugatti Chiron-first drive, Car and Driver. & Road and Track drive to 217mph

2017 Bugatti Chiron First Drive | Review | Car and Driver

Watch How Quickly the Bugatti Chiron Accelerates to 217 MPH

Next up is a (limiter-off) drive to test out the Chiron's top speed of over 261 mph.

So, it's better than the Veyron in... literally every way that counts? Quicker, faster, grippier, better handling, more communicative, more comfortable, and lower on NVH. At the same time. Compared to a car that barely had competition in the first place. Bloody hell.

Wet grip might be the only thing that's worse, theoretically -- just because the Chiron's tire is a Cup 2 variant, whereas the Veyron's is a PS2 variant. Wonder how that comparison pans out.

Weird asides:

Based on the numbers I've seen, the Chiron's rear tires are 10 mm narrower and have a significantly smaller OD than the Veyron's rears. Interesting if true. Goes to show you what having the right type of tire can do. The Chiron's tire is not only based on a tire that's a class up (in terms of dry grip), but also 2-3 generations newer.

Also, torsional rigidity: the Chiron's supposed to be stiffer, but I've seen 50,000 Nm/deg for it vs. 60,000 for the Veyron. Wonder what that's all about.

Tire width weirdness verified. Wider front, narrower rear, apparently for handling reasons.

Ha, apparently they claim wet grip is improved as well.

Also, despite the narrower and shorter size in the rear, the amount of rubber on the road is UP on BOTH axles.

The tyres, size 285 / 30 R20 at the front and 355 / 25 R21 at the rear, have a larger contact surface (+14% at the front, +12% at the rear) and therefore greater potential in decisive driving situations with significant improvements in braking behaviour, acceleration, grip on wet and dry roads, noise levels, mechanical comfort and handling at the limits.

EDIT: And it has a cooled glove box. lolol
