autoweek on mazdaspeed 6

http://www.autoweek.com/news.cms?newsId=103542
seems the AWD system is going to be an EVO/STI like performance oriented system afterall? 0-60 is mad slow though... let alone EVO and STI, even the v6 altima SE with 250hp does 0-60 in 5.9 now.

What Mazda says: "This is the fastest-accelerating sedan Mazda has ever built," said Shiro Yoshioka, vice president of research and development for Mazda North American Operations. "It's the most powerful Mazda ever sold in America, and that includes the third-generation RX-7."

I will never trust what Autoweek has to say... The AWD system will not be as performance oriented as the Evo and STI, and I had been led to believe this car was frontwheel drive based and that it was basicly the same system as the Ford Five Hundred and various Volvos, I guess I'm wrong but I'd be more willing to admit that if it was someone other than Autoweek. Also, that 0-60 time is just Mazda's estimated claim and is high, the car should/will be closer to low/mid 5s.

BlueEyes 11-08-2005 12:14 PM

It better be closer to mid-low 5's.

Tirminyl 11-08-2005 12:17 PM

A canadian mag just tested this car and got 5.3s for 0-60. Autoweek did nothing but requote Mazda's claims.

DreRX8 11-08-2005 12:32 PM

After the horsepower debacle with the Miata AND RX8 Mazda will probably be more conservative with acceleration numbers--like Porsche is. This car will easily be faster and a better drive than a V6 Altima.

TODreamer 11-08-2005 01:07 PM

yeah...0-60 in 6.2 at the quoted specs..... doesn't add up

yeah youre right, awd traction with that kind of hp and torque should be much faster than 6.2

yeah by like somewhat of a second.

But then again we dont know what this thing is gonna actually put down to the ground... theres been no dyno tests yet... or has there been?

rx8wannahave 11-08-2005 01:39 PM

Their V-6 does it in mid to low 6's(0-60), so this car with 50 more HP and AWD should do it in mid 5's I'll bet.

Our poor 8...aint getting no love from Mazda, for shame!

DreRX8 11-08-2005 01:52 PM

Thats a bit optomistic--their V6 is mid 6s-low 7s at best. Even with that said--this car is undoubtedly 5.4-5.6 0-60. We should get a pool going on this. :D:

crossbow 11-08-2005 02:12 PM

As mentioned its already been benched (at least in 30F weather) at a 0-60 of 5.3 seconds.

(0-100 km/h of 5.5)

Its also lighter then marked by mazda, coming in at 3441 on a vehicle scale. There seems to have been quite a bit of changes since the preproduction models, mazda appears to have listened to the feedback from those early sessions.

playdoh43 11-08-2005 02:19 PM

well if the AWD system is indeed changed to a performance oriented full time version. then Id be even more impressed. its suddenly a more convienient and more daily drivable version of the evo/sti. i highly doubt its going to take a bite out of the entry luxury performance segment though.

DreRX8 11-08-2005 02:39 PM

well in such limited numbers--it wouldn't take a bite out the entry luxury performance segment even if they sold every one they built.

rx8wannahave 11-08-2005 02:52 PM

I hear the price is 28-30K, that aint bad...not good for me...but aint bad of a price really.

Gosh, I thought the 6 come in in the low sixes 0-60, I guess I was off by about .5 sec

DreRX8 11-08-2005 04:21 PM

While many criticise the 'speed6--I think its an excellent package for what it is. I'd be inclined to have it and an 8 in the garage--hell I already have two Mazdas as it is.

crossbow 11-08-2005 05:52 PM

The fastest mag reviews of the 6s mtx were 6.4 and 6.7 seconds 0-60. The car has trouble off the line, and doesn't even start building power till 3k, its not really a good straight line racer, pretty sweet midrange though.

Steiner 11-08-2005 10:02 PM

Autoweek is, by far, the worst magazine when it comes to reliable performance numbers. When they're not simply regurgitating the manufacturers published specs, they're out on the track pulling the kind of 1/4 times and 0-60mph times we'd all expect out of a little arthritic, blue-hairded old lady. Their numbers are always awfull. Check out this article they did...

http://www.autoweek.com/article.cms?articleId=100811

The morons at Autoweek managed to get these numbers for the Volkswagon R32...

STANDING START ACCELERATION
0-60 mph: 6.18 sec
0-100 km/h (62.1 mph): 6.55 sec
0-quarter-mile: 14.59 sec @ 93.8 mph

and these numbers for Evo RS...

STANDING START ACCELERATION
0-60 mph: 5.81 sec
0-100 km/h (62.1 mph): 6.30 sec
0-quarter-mile: 14.50 sec @ 91.6 mph

Ridiculous doesn't even begin to describe the times they got. I agree that magazine racing is annoying, but I could have made better numbers with that Evo on a tank of 87 octane...blindfolded...and with a dead hooker tied to the hood.

terrypk1 11-08-2005 10:16 PM

i am sicken and tired of RX8's acceleration. i believe even the new civic SI can take us. wtf.
then always, people will say "we are better in cornering." what a bs. Cornering requries skills. yeah sure, some of us might be better in cornering but not all of us. i hate my car so much now and it worthes nothing for trade in.

drifter_d 11-08-2005 10:35 PM

dude, Mazdas, especially the RX line, have ALWAYS been great handling cars. sounds like you want a point and shoot drag car - i recommend american muscle for that. why? cuz even STI's and Evo's were bred from rally heritage - not the 1320 or stoplight to stoplight racing. there's more to driving (and racing) than the fast and furious (gak...) scene.

hahahahaha, its comforting to know my car can beat a EVO RS :). j/k
actually, i think autoweek times are more realistic representation of real world numbers that your average driver will pull? of course we all know with a very skilled driver who can do a proper launch and shift well can easily do sub 5 sec 0-60 and low 13s 1/4 mile on the RS. For most of us average joes, i think we'll do something closer to the autoweek time. but i must admit lol trapping 91.6 in a RS is probably shitty even for us average drivers hahaha.

i want a car that can handle and also accelerate. rx8 is jut not my type. it is by far the most easy to handle car i have driven yet. but it is not fast to be called a sports car. a sports car should be something that can pull 0-60 with in 6seconds. moreover, with a 350Z or STi, more horses better fuel economy. i never understand why people are going crazy for rotary powered cars. yes the FD was good for it had turbos.

i know this is off topic.
but please somebody please tell me what is the good thing about rotary? so that you guys are so crazy for it.
don't tell me about the rev, because for RX8s in high revs like 8000 or 9000 you get less acceleration than when you are at 6000.

Steiner 11-09-2005 01:50 AM

Best thing about a rotary is...hmmm...it's unique and responds to FI like fat chicks to funyons. Hold off if you can. Sooner or later Mazda will release something you'll like (Mazdaspeed 6, Mazdaspeed 8, etc) and you'll get a good trade in value for your RX-8. Selling via private party is hell. Hang in there a little longer dude. You drive a seriously nice car so don't get greedy...yet. ;)

playdoh43 11-09-2005 02:00 AM

stop jacking my thread steiner! thats evo owners for you.

crossbow 11-09-2005 06:19 AM

Ya, Autoweek basically drives the car the way the general consumer would. I think if they rev over 2k while starting, they get yelled at.

Is this guy joking? Besides everything that he has said in this post being factually inaccurate--don't people test drive cars before they buy them :scratchhe
